Senior League Week 23

Division 1

Whistlers A produced an excellent display this week to slash Lions A's lead at the top of Doric Insurance sponsored 1st Division to just a single point, with 2 fixtures remaining.

Despite a strong 7-3 victory, the Whistlers side is still mathematically in 3rd position behind Lions C in 2nd, who have the best games ratio in the Division. There is a big top of the table clash between the Lions sides next week which is likely to define the destination of the league title.

Garry Dodd is now also just 2 matches from completing an unblemished season of singles wins and he recorded wins 64-66 this week courtesy of a straight game win over Joshua Butler and 4 set wins over Ben Foss and 2nd Division reserve Andy Gill. Mark Pipet put in one of his strongest performances of the season when he overcame Foss in 4 sets and he also defeated Gill in straight sets. Dodd and Pipet held strong in the deciding end of their doubles encounter with Butler and Foss and took it 11-9 to make sure of the win. Ryan Gilson continues to impress and added a 4 set win over Gill to extend the margin of victory. He also gave Foss a good run for his money before losing the 5th end 11-5.

Lions C took full advantage of the slip from the league leaders when they comfortably came through against Lions B 8-2. Phil Ogier and Paul Hainsworth led strongly for the victors with unbeaten evenings. Ogier comfortably beat Liam Robilliard and Ryan Bichard in straight games before overcoming reserve Jez Powell in 4 sets. Hainsworth had a tougher evening and needed 4 sets to beat Powell and Robilliard and the full 5 sets to eventually come through against Bichard. Andre De Carteret earned an excellent 4 set win over Robilliard and he also combined well with Ogier to get the better of Robilliard and Bichard in a 4 set doubles win.

Whistlers C will finish 4th this season after they edged past bottom placed side Whistlers B 6-4. Lawrence Stacey and Matthew Casey each beat Martin Sarre and reserve Corey Brouard in singles action before teaming to win the doubles Sarre and Josh Stacey in 5 sets. Albert Unden was the player to pick up the all important 6th rubber when he beat Brouard in 4 sets. Josh Stacey did all he could for his side and this included an edgy 5 set win over twin Lawrence, 11-9 in the final end.

Division 2

Lions D were the first team to secure a league title this season when they took the Division 2 crown this week after they snuck past Ravenscroft Panthers B 6-4. Jamie Ferbrache has impressed all season for the champions, but he had a difficult night at the office during 5 set wins over Billy Ogier and Steve Martin on top of a 4 set win over reserve Juliette Yeaman. Ian Le Page contributed well with wins over Martin and Yeaman in 4, but he missed out to Ogier in 4. The doubles was an important tie and it was Ferbrache and Le Page that took the spoils after a 4 set win over Martin and Ogier.

Division 3

Whistlers G are just a single point away from picking up the title after their 7-3 win over Lions I this week. Ellis Tomlin continued his 100% singles record with wins over Lynn Finn, Lionel Jones and Jenny Powell. This feat was repeated by Tom Hagerich and for good measure the duo combined with a straight game doubles win over Jones and Finn. All of the Lions players picked up consolation wins over Jayden Tucknott.

Division 4

Whistlers K have taken the Division 4 crown after edging past Whistlers L 6-4 this week. Shane Cotter and Joe Le Page each won 2 singles matches, with Cotter beating Nathan Pinchemain and Darren Sarre and Le Page overcoming Pinchemain and Josh Lewis. The pair also won the pivotal doubles clash against Sarre and Pinchemain in straight games. The final victory was picked up by Andy Le Page when he defeated Pinchemain in straight games.
