Senior League Week 16

Division 1

League leaders Lions C lost for a second consecutive week and their lead at the top is by a solitary point.

Just like the previous week's narrow 6-4 defeat to Whistlers C, it was the same outcome this week, when 3rd placed side Whistlers A took the points. Garry Dodd still has his 100% singles record intact and he defeated Paul Hainsworth, Phil Ogier and Andre De Carteret on the night in 5, 4 and straight games respectively. He also combined with Mark Pipet to win a crucial doubles encounter over Hainsworth and De Carteret that went the distance. Hainsworth and De Carteret were always behind and pinched the 4th 13-11 to force a decider in which they led for the most part. Dodd and Pipet battled well and edged the thrilling decider 14-12. Pipet himself overcame De Carteret in 4 games and was unlucky not to add to his tally on the night, narrowly losing out to both Ogier and Hainsworth in 5. Junior left-hander Ryan Gilson was the player to pick up the important 6th rubber for the victors when he brushed past De Carteret in 5 games.

2nd placed side Lions A took advantage of the slip-up and moved to within a single point of the leaders after beating Whistlers C 6-4. Ben Foss and Dan Collenette were directly responsible for 5 of the required 6 matches as each overcame Albert Unden and Matthew Casey in singles action before teaming to win the doubles clash over Lawrence Stacey and Casey 13-11 in the 5th and final game. It was Lions' 2nd Division reserve Andy Gill that picked up the 6th victory when he battled past Unden over 5 sets, having trailed 2-1. Stacey was unbeaten for the defeated Whistlers side, although he needed to battle back from a 2-0 deficit to overcome Foss 12-10 in the deciding leg.

Bottom placed side Whistlers B picked up their 2nd consecutive win for the first time this season when they beat Lions B 6-4. Joshua Stacey led the way with a trio of singles wins over Luke Bichard, Ryan Bichard and reserve Liam Robilliard, however he had to do it the hard away in the latter encounter, where he reversed a 2-0 deficit to win 12-10 in the decider. Martin Sarre had a good evening and beat both Bichard brothers for the loss of just a single end against Luke. Stacey paired with Joseph Bourgaize in the doubles encounter where they secured an important 4 game doubles win over the Bichard brothers.

Division 2

Lions D remain top of the pile by 2 points after they secured an emphatic 9-1 win over Lions H. Jamie Ferbrache and Andy Gill were each relatively untroubled during their singles wins over Dave Finn, Rob Vile and Ken Tucknott. Ian Le Page added wins over Vile in 5 and Tucknott in 4, however he lost to Finn in 4, which prevented the whitewash. The team of Gill and Le Page won the doubles match against Vile and Tucknott in 4 games.

Lions E kept the pressure on the leaders after they narrowly edged past Lions G 6-4. Carl Le Tissier won all 3 of his singles matches over Brian, Andy and Sue Ferbrache and this feat was impressively matched by reserve Peter Powell who put in an excellent performance on the night. Each of the G side's players did well to defeat Mike Lucas and Andy and Sue won the doubles over Carl and Mike in 4 games.

Division 3

Whistlers G's lead at the top remains at 4 points after they were held to a 5-5 draw by St Pauls B. Ellis Tomlin once more dominated proceedings and his 100% singles record remains in place following wins over Craig Dunning, John Wills and Derek Carter. Tom Hagerich added victories over Carter and Wills, but he was unable to complete the hat-trick, losing to Dunning in 5. Dunning and Carter combined well in the doubles where they beat Hagerich and Jayden Tucknott in straight games.

Division 4

Whistlers K remain 3 points clear at the top following their 6-4 win over Whistlers L. Joe Le Page was the man of the match for the leaders on this occasion as he beat Nathan Pinchemain, Darren Sarre and Josh Lewis in singles action. Shane Cotter beat Pinchemain and Sarre and the pair combined to win the doubles over Pinchemain and Sarre in straight games.
