Another enjoyable nights table tennis with Kevin Nicholls yet again the star turn. Exeter Champion Mike Hugh was always going to provide the toughest games of the night for the B team and although Gibbs and Cheung game close to taking legs off Mike they couldn't quite match his quality. Any loose serve is dispatched, as is any loose return and Mike was the decisive factor in taking the 100% doubles record of Gibbs & Cheung 12-10 in the 5th. The last singles of the night was a repeat of last seasons Exeter final which Mike had won convincingly. Maybe because Kevin can't go back so far in the Coaver room, Mike couldn't blast the ball past him so easily and Kevin's serve was working well denying Mike easy points. The match swung one way and then the other before, in the 4th set , with Kevin 2 games to 1 ahead he had an inspired spell including an incredible counter hit winner from the back of the room and stood at match point. Mike didn't lose his nerve and kept going for his big shots to take the leg 13-11.Kevin didn't lose belief and started so well in the 5th that Mike, trying perhaps too hard, made a very rare service error. Mike kept going for things but it was Kevin's night, a wonderful game! We thought that the drama was over, but the final doubles was the closest game of the night with 3 deuce games and Jon and Kevin keeping their 100% record, just! A special mention must go to Dave Bazell, who at 81 must be the oldest player to ever play in the 1st division and he played his part in an excellent final doubles.
