The second round of the Bridle Cup has now been completed, and the draw for the quarter finals is given below.
The second round produced several more extremely tight matches, including Wingfield F’s 5-point victory over Div 1’s West Exe C (658-653), Okehampton C’s 6-point defeat of Moretonhampstead, (679-673) and in an all-Div 3 clash, OSM E emerged the 7-point winners over Met Office Whirlwinds (713-706).
Div 2’s Okehampton C needed to claw back a deficit of 132 if they were to overcome Div 3’s Moretonhampstead, and they finally overtook their plucky opponents in the last doubles set, having trailed for the entire match until the last few points. They still trailed by 21 points as the set began, but a dominant display by Zoe Bennett and Nick Davies secured a tight victory with an overall 40-13 doubles win.
Wingfield F’s win was most entertaining. The Div 3 outfit began the evening with an advantage of 180 points, and were still leading by 17 as they went into the final doubles set against their illustrious Div 1 opponents. They contrived to lose the first leg 10-20 and entered the final leg with a lead of just 7 points. They then fell behind, trailing 6-14 in the second leg, but dug deep and somehow clawed back the points to cross the winning line just 5 points ahead, albeit losing the leg 18-20.
OSM E began their evening with an advantage of 136 points over Whirlwinds, for whom the sets ran out just too quickly. A great performance by Whirlwinds was not quite enough to overcome such a deficit, succumbing eventually to a loss by just 7 points.
