Three of last season’s top performers in division 2 have made the step up to division 1 and are playing together in the JLM Dragonflies team. The evidence of the first matches is that James Glazzard, Stephen Glazzard and Kevin Taylor are very much at home in the top division. Dragonflies started with a 9-1 victory over Wyre Elite. Kevin Taylor won all 3. James Glazzard won 2 out of 3, only losing to Para Table Tennis star Lee Wilkinson. Wilkinson recently won Gold at the Spanish Open. Stephen Glazzard’s turn to play came in a 5-5 draw against Littleton Aces. Stephen Glazzard beat Andrew Taylor and Dave Bevington but lost in straight sets to Mark Dudley. Kevin Taylor beat Dudley and Taylor but lost 12-10 in the fifth set against Bevington.

The Evesham & District Basepoint Division 2 season got underway with 7 matches played. JLM Eagles’ new player Barbara Szeligowska opened the season with 6 wins out of 6, all in straight sets and already looks a strong contender for top player in the division. Eagles were held to a 5-5 draw in their first match against Bengeworth Pandas. Szeligowska was unbeaten, but Lynda Reid and Margaret Dignum hit back for Pandas, both beating Hawks’ Harry Azima and Joan Parfitt. Azima beat Dave Simkins of Pandas and also combined with Szeligowska to win the doubles. Simkins won a tight 5-set battle with Parfitt to ensure Pandas came away with the draw. Eagles had a more straight forward victory in their second match of the season, beating Littleton Giants 10-0.
Littleton Dolphins finished second in division 2 last season, and have started as if they mean to take the top spot this time. Dolphins’ opening match was against a weakened Littleton Jackson Five who only had 2 players. Ben Robinson and John McKay both won their matches for Dolphins. Daniel Reynolds beat Littleton’s Sandra Jackson but lost in 5 sets to Rosie Phillpot. Dolphins then showed the strength in depth they have available this season by fielding a completely new side against Bengeworth Pandas and winning 8-2. Vladimir Averin and Murat Shafigullin both won 3 for Dolphins. Karen Chu beat John Buxton of Pandas but lost to Margaret Dignum and Dave Simkins.
