8th November 2016 Match Reports

in Division One of the Eastern Valley Table Tennis League YMCA Preachers maintained their top place despite losing their latest match to Cwmbran Aztecs in a titanic match 18-19. The outcome of the match was not decided until the final game of the evening when the Aztecs' Andrew Ryder took 2 sets off player of the match Ray Goulding to clinch the win. Goulding won all his matches including a second win of the season over his rival Tony Collins. For the Aztecs Ryder had a good win over the higher ranked David Lloyd, although it was perhaps not a surprise as this was Ryder's second win over Lloyd this season. The Aztecs Mark Edmunds picked up 2 wins including the scalp of Lloyd.

Second placed side Cwmbran Blues could not take advantage of the leaders defeat despite winning their match against Blaenavon Aces 18-12. The Blues' Roger Grech and Bhargav Uday Chandra both won 2 matches but were no match for the Aces Piotr Sniezek who picked up the player of the match award with his 3    wins. Sniezek was making his first appearance of the season and looks to be carrying on his good form from last season.

The final match saw Bristol Nomads take revenge for their early season loss to Cwmbran Colts by winning their latest match 25-10. The difference in this match was the continuing improving form showed by the Nomads Alex Banks who picked up the player of the match with his 3 straight set wins. This was in contrast to the earlier match where he lost all his matches against the same players. Banks was well supported by Ian Maggs and Peter Gordon with their 2 wins. For the Colts Matthew Pearce fought hard for his 2 wins with his only defeat coming against Banks.

In Division Two we have new leaders in Cwmbran Dynamos following their 25-7 win over Cwmbran Fellows. Unfortunately the Fellows only had 2 players and were no match for the Dynamos. The Dynamos' Alex Jones was the player of the match with his maximum wins including a revenge for his early season loss to Wayne Ford.

The previous leaders of Division Two, Cwmbran Panthers were missing 2 of their regular side but were still too good for North Gwent Cougars and won 20-10. It was one of the Panthers 'borrowed' players, Chris Thomas who produced a player of the match performance with his 3 wins. The shock result in this match was the win for Cougars' Cerys Evans over the highly ranked Howard Gaut in straight sets.

The final match between Cwmbran Eccentrics and Cwmbran Devils saw a very competitive match ending in a 17-17 draw. The player of the match was the Eccentrics Lincoln Alford with his 3 wins and he was well supported by Matthew Powell with 2 wins. The Devils' Colin Scott fought hard for his 2 wins and his only loss was to Alford in 5 sets.
