25th October 2016 Match Reports

Despite losing for the second week in a row YMCA Preachers still lead Division One of the Eastern Valley Table Tennis League. In their latest match they lost 19-21 to Cwmbran Blues in a very close match that had 5 games that went to 5 sets. The Blues move to within a point of the leaders and were indebted to a player of the match performance from David D Lloyd with 3 wins. He was well supported by Mark Farrow with 2 wins and a battling performance from Roger Grech, who despite losing his 3 matches they were all in 5 sets. For the Preachers there were good wins for Julie Furber and Claire Flannagan over Grech and for David Lloyd over Mark Farrow and Grech.

After a slow start to the season last years winners, Bristol Nomads, have won their last 2 matches to move into 3rd position. Their latest match saw them defeat Blaenavon Aces 23-11 and they provided the player of the match in Peter Gordon with 3 wins. He was well supported by Ian Maggs with his 3 wins. For the Preachers there were 2 wins for Jonathan Allen including a good win over Maggs.

The final match in Division One was between Cwmbran Aztecs and Cwmbran Colts and ended in a 17-17 draw. In a very competitive match there was an outstanding player of the match performance from Tony Collins in winning all his matches. Collins was well supported by Andrew Ryder with his 2 wins including a win over the higher ranked Mathew Pearce. For the Colts there were battling performances from all the players with Ben Pearce winning 2 matches.

In Division Two, Cwmbran Panthers extended their lead at the top following their win over Cwmbran Devils 25-8. This match nearly saw a shock result with the leader in the averages, Mike Blatchford, losing the first 2 sets of his match against Sunam Rai. However, Blatchford summoned up all his skills to win 3-2 and secure the player of the match award. The Panthers' Howard Gaut also had 3 wins but narrowly lost out on the player of the match award, whilst Yuri Cherkasenko picked up 2 wins.  For the Devils, Stan Williams provided his teams only win of the match.

The only team mounting any serious challenge to the Panthers are Cwmbran Dynamos. They had a comfortable win over North Gwent Cougars 21-7 with 3 wins for player of the match Alex Jones and 2 wins each for Will Smith-Haddon and Marta Morris. For the Cougars there were 2 good wins for Iestyn Howells.

The final match in Division Two saw Cwmbran Fellows secure a closely fought 21-16 win over Cwmbran Eccentrics. the Fellows Wayne Ford picked up the player of the match award with his 3 wins and was well supported by Chris Thomas and Haydn Skinner with 6 points each. For the Eccentrics there were 2 wins each for Lincoln Alford and Matthew Powell.
