9th DECEMBER MATCH REPORT

Once again this week player withdrawals affected the matches in Division One of the Eastern Valley Table Tennis League. Late player withdrawals had a particular affect on the top match in Div. One between Bristol Nomads and Cwmbran Blues with only 2 a side match being played. The final result was a 14 - 12 win for the Blues mainly due to a player of the match performance from David Lloyd with 2 wins out of 2. In fact David had a busy night because he was called upon to cover a player absence for Cwmbran Colts in their match against Cwmbran Aztecs. However, this time he lost one match against player of the match Tony Collins. The Aztecs closed the gap on the leaders by winning 19 - 15. Result of the night in this match was John Thomas(Colts) win over Andrew Ryder (Aztecs), although Andrew was struggling all night with a back injury which caused him to forfeit a match. The race for the Division One title is hotting up with only 4 points covering the top 3 sides.

In Division Two Cwmbran Panthers continue to lead the way following their comprehensive 27 - 3 win over the bottom side Blaenavon Bulldogs. However, they were certainly helped by the loan of the top player from their rivals Cwmbran Dynamos, Alex Jones, who turned in a player of the match performance to win 3 matches without dropping a set. Who said the "Spirit of Christmas" is dead. Alex was ably assisted by Mile, sorry, Mike Blatchford and Howard Gaut with 3 wins each. For the Bulldogs there was a spirited performance from Joseph Hill who competed well in all his matches.

Cwmbran Fellows and Cwmbran Eccentrics continued their battle for mid-table dominance with the Fellows coming out on top 23 - 12, helped by a player of the match performance from Wayne Ford. However he was closely followed by Glenda Prytherch (Fellows) who produced the shock of the night in her defeat of Lincoln Alford in straight sets. Glenda followed this up by wins in her other 2 matches to remain unbeaten on the night.

In the other match in Div. 2 Blaenavon Aces proved they have not given up the fight for the top places by winning 22 - 15 against Cwmbran Devils. Ben Pearce (Aces) continued his good form with a player of the match performance to win all his matches. For the Devils Colin Scott fought bravely to win 2 matches.
