Diss Closed Table Tennis Championships

On Sunday 11th March 2018 the annual Diss and District Table Tennis League held its closed championships at Hartismere High School in Eye. With the finalists contending their matches on finals night at Palgrave Community Centre on Friday 16th March 2018, commencing 7:15pm with the Open Singles semi-finals. 

The Championships attracted the largest group of participants for many years, with over 30 table tennis players competing in the different events on the day.

 The day started with the Handicap Singles, with 25 competitors, which was initially played on a knock-out basis. After the group stages and quarter finals, the semi finals were reached by James Taylor (+10) v Ashley Marsh (+8) and James Crisp (+11) v David Crisp (+11). Ashley Marsh emerged as victor in the first semi , overcoming his 5 point deficit to win (21 – 25) & ( 22 – 25) to make it through to the final. He was joined by James Crisp who beat David Crisp after an even start (23 – 25) & (17 – 25).

The Open Singles was played initially in 8 groups of 3 with winner and runner-up proceeding to knock-out stages.  The quarter finals saw Chris Jones knockout Paul Mortlock (11-2, 5-11, 11-7, 11-8). Lewis Taylor knockout Phil Waity (11-9,11-6,11-7). James Skilleter knockout Ian Brown (11-5,11-6,11-3), and Stephen Stolworthy knockout Dan Taylor (11-8, 11-7, 11-5).. This meant that it was the top four seeds that made it through to the semi - finals to be played on Finals Night.

The First Division Singles was played in 2 groups of 4 players with the winner and runners up going through to the semi finals. After the groups were completed the semi-finalists were James Taylor v Alan Worthington and Richard Pursehouse v Nick Skinner.

It was James Taylor who emerged as winner of the first semi final beating Alan Worthington in 3 straight sets (11-6, 11-8, 13-11).

It the second semi final it was Richard Pursehouse who claimed his place in the final beating Nick Skinner in four sets (5-11, 11-9, 11-6, 11-8).

In the other age restricted events the results were as follows;-

In the Under 40s. 3 groups of three players + 1 group of 2 players. Winner and runners up through to quarter finals. After the quarter finals it was Lewis Taylor through to the semis having beaten Dan Taylor. Ashley Marsh through to the semis having beaten Phil Mortlock. James Crisp through to the semis having beaten Tim Simms-Baalham and Phil Waity through to the semis having beaten Scott Boast.

In the semi finals Lewis Taylor beat Ashley Marsh (11-8, 11-9, 11-3) and Phil Waity beat James Crisp (11-6, 11-3, 11-6).

The Over 40s was played on a round robin group where James Skilleter will meet Stephen Stolworthy in the final

The Over 50s saw three players in a round robin with the top two contesting the final. Chris Jones Will play Trevor Cottee in the final.

The Over 60s was played in two groups of four with the winner and runners up contesting the semi final.The first semi final  was Francis Webb who beat Alan Levine (11-3, 11-1, 11-7). The second semi final was Ian Brown who beat Alan Worthington (11-3, 11-4, 9-11, 11-4).

First Div Doubles.

Just 3 pairs contested this event with Richard Pursehouse and Harry Skilleter getting to the final along with Alan Worthington and Booan Temple

The day ended with the Open Doubles event played out a knock out basis. 9 Pairings contested this event.

Into the semi finals went Steve Stolworthy & Trevor Cottee who were knocked out by Dan Taylor and Ian Brown who made it through to the final comfortably in straight sets (11-5, 11-6, 11-5).

Into the second semi final  were Phil Waity and Francis Webb who were knocked out by last years champion James Skilleter and Lewis Taylor again in three straight sets ( 11-8,11-9, 11-9).

Unfortunately, the first division final between James Taylor and Richard Pursehouse has been postponed due to injury and this will be played at a later date.

Stephen Stolworthy has also had to withdraw through injury and so his places in the open singles semi-final and the over 40’s final will be taken by Dan Taylor and Paul Mortlock respectively.
