Crawley & Horsham had great expectations going up to the ELCC finals being played at Wellingborough, Northants last weekend, and their high hopes were fulfilled with two outstanding wins.
Kate Cheer and Alice Hazell teamed up in the Bromfield Trophy in which the players play two singles each and a doubles. In the first two matches against Cambridge and Tamworth Kate got the team off to a good start each time and Alice also came up with two excellent wins to put Crawley 2 up. The doubles comes next with the girls combining well to seal the matches and the reverse singles to chalk up two 5-0 victories.
In the decider Hull were the opponents and proved more troublesome opposition, their number one being the highly ranked Jasmin Wong. Kate started well but let Jasmin back in, Kate eventually showing her class winning in 5. Alice then came up trumps with a great win against the tricky Zoe Hewitt. Another doubles win sealed the Cup,the match ending 4-1 to Crawley Alice going down close to Jasmin. Kate unbeaten and a strong 5 from 6 for Alice.
In the Carter Cup Josh Bennett and George Hazell were pitched in a strong group with Nottingham, Northumbria and last years champions Wembley & Harrow. Some tough matches here but the boys prevailed with George and Josh chalking up a good victories over Wembley's Eren Gozcu to head the group.
In the final they were up against a very strong Cambridge side, Josh won the first but George went down in five to Chingz Kuanyshev. The boys then lost the doubles, Josh squared the match against Chingz so all down to George who excelled with the pressure on beating James Kelly three straight to enable Crawley to win 3-2.
A great achievement for the Crawley & Horsham League taking the two prestigious titles, Carter Cup and Bromfield Trophy.
