Sussex over 60s finish 3rd in Premier Division

The Sussex side consisting of Johnny Clarke,Barrie Gilbert,Andy Meads and Sheila King(Hastings) guaranteed another season in the top flight following a successful final weekend.

Against Cheshire Sussex were three games up as the opposition were a man short Brian Johns!!! for the whole weekend.Clarke beat Wayne Percival in five,Sheila King beat Doreen Schofield and won the mixed with Johnny.Barrie and Johnny won the mens doubles for a 7-3 win.

Barrie won two singles against Lancashire beating Brian Clements and Ron Bennett,Sheila beat Sylvia Graham and Barrie and Johnny got the doubles.At 4-5 down Barrie and Sheila won the mixed in five for a hard earned draw.

On Sunday Sussex quickly went 1-5 down with only a lone five set win from Clarke over Steve Kosmosky .Barrie and Johnny got the mens doubles,Barrie defeated the pen holder Freddie Cheung and teamed up with Sheila to win the last mixed,a 4-6 loss to Yorkshire .Blast from the past John Millward played in one of the mixed matches.

In the final match against Kent Barrie had a nervy five set win over Roger Pingram,Clarke an easy win over Chris Hooper,Gilbert and Clarke also won their reverse singles and the mens doubles.Barrie and Sheila won the last mixed for a 6-4 win.Altogether a very successful weekend but with most of the team much closer to 70 than 60 it will be difficult to hang onto Premier league status in the future without some new blood.
