Sussex over 60s make fine start in county championships

The first match was against last years champions Essex.Johnny Clarke won two beating Peter Radford and Stuart Gibbs 9 in the fifth.Barrie Gilbert beat Stuart in three and Sheila King defeated Marjorie Dawson also three straight.Gilbert and Clarke won the doubles and Robin Stace and Sheila had a great win in the final mixed to record a 6-4 victory.

Against Hertfordshire JC won two again including a wafer thin 8 in the decider over Stuart Seaholme,he also beat Derek Balding in four.Barrie Gilbert beat Ken Stonebridge and Stuart Seaholme for the first time.Sheila King defeated Sally Bax in three for a 5-5 draw.

In the final match against Oxford JC won two including a brilliant three straight win over Karl Bushell,Barrie Gilbert beat Neil Burford in a close five setter and debutant Tony Rowell secured a point with a fine win over Nat Richardson.Tony also won the first mixed with Sheila deuce in the fifth after saving matchpoint.Sheila won her singles and the final mixed with JC for a 7-3 victory.

With Lincolnshire dropping out and only  one county being relegated Sussex should have secured another season in the Premier division currently in second place behind Yorkshire.
