Aces high - match reports by Kate Hughes

Aces v Wellesbourne

The first match played by Colebridge Aces in Leamington Division 1 was against Wellesbourne (away). The first match was Kate Hughes against John Price, where Kate won 11-8, 11-8, 11-9. This was followed by Mike Rinnhofer beating the experienced Alan Cotton 3-1 (having dropped the first set).

Ben Willson then had a 5 set battle with Pete Dunnett, with Ben winning 11-9 in the 5th set. The match continued to have several close games, Kate was 10-6 up in the 5th against Cotton, only for Alan to come back to 10-10. Kate managed to win 12-10.

Ben Willson also beat Cotton in the 5th set, with lots of attacking and defensive rallies throughout. The doubles was another 5 setter, Willson and Rinnhofer winning 11-9 in the 5th set.

Sadly Pete Dunnett injured himself in the middle of the match against Rinnhofer so conceded the final set, and the following match against Kate.

A great 10-0 win for the Aces in their first match.

Aces v St George's B

Ian Ferguson made his comeback to League table tennis in style for the first time in 12 months, by winning all three singles matches and the doubles. He beat county player Mark Jackson 11-3, 11-6, 11-3, hitting winners from all over the table as well as forcing numerous errors from Jackson. He beat Ron Vose 11-2, 11-5, 11-1, hitting forehand flick service returns as winners, and controlling play throughout all three games, and Luke Hobbins 11-4,11-4, 11-8. Despite being under the weather health-wise, it did not affect his play on the table. He was sharp, quick and playing awesome shots off both wings.

Ben Willson won two matches beating Ron Vose 14-12 in the 5th and Luke Hobbins 3-0. Kate Hughes lost to Jackson and Vose, but beat Luke Hobbins 11-6, 11-7, 14-12 (having been 1-6 and 3-7 down in the third end). Kate teamed up with star of the night Ferguson to beat Jackson and Hobbins 11-2, 11-4, 11-7 - with Ian missing only one ball in the whole of the doubles match!

The final match score was 7-3 to Colebridge, which added to their first match win of 10-0 against Wellesbourne leaves them second in the league.

Week commencing 13th October, sees the Aces play two matches v Colebridge Braves and Enigmas (a match which was postponed in the first week of the season). The Aces are hoping to continue with their good form.
