Colebridge Eagles made an unexpected , and unaccustomed , start to their 2014 league campaign yesterday evening by storming to a 5-0 lead against their club mates Colebridge Dinosaurs.
After such a strong opening it was not unreasonable to assume that a maximum return would be the outcome. It was not to be however , as the Dinosaurs rallied , and won three consecutive sets to take the match to 5-3 ; to employ a football cliche - squeaky bum time.
The Eagles stapped their vitals , and with a Mike Evetts win over Brian Morris ensuring the match at 6-3 , it was left to Bernard Oliver to make the ultimate result more emphatic with a 7-3 final scoreline.
Dan Ranford held two for the Dinos , and Jim Connor one . The improving Farooq Kakar took two , with his uncompromising brand of forehand top spinning , and , together with a five set victory in the doubles , is proving an asset of considerable value.
The Eagles , after three consecutive victories , travel to the north of the city next week for a meeting with division leaders Sutton B , where a points return of any kind will be positive outcome after their 9-1 reverse in the first half of the season.
As ever , thanks are due to Mrs Oliver for her outstanding efforts in the catering department. Appreciated.
