This season’s Colchester & District Table Tennis Team Knockout Cups were duly completed on time with some consternation, but common sense generally prevailed in the end.
For the first time, all five finals were played on the same night at the Tollgate Club seeing some thirty players compete.
In the Kiltie Cup, a strong St James A team consisting of Sam Hume, Paul Hume and Felipe Rodriguez overcame Tollgate A featuring Mel Rampton, Colin Bennett and Wudong Liu, 5-1.
The all Tollgate battle for the John Kellett Cup saw the D team whitewash the C team 5-0 with Ciaran Whelan, Martin Hogg and Dawn Baldry all unbeaten against club mates; Ethan Lloyd, Annabelle Rodriguez and Daryl Lott.
The Giles Bennett Smith-Cup was the closest contested final of the night with Rowhedge F pipping Lawford C 5-4, with Rowhedge regulars Pawel Szemro, Kamil Lentas and Mark Glenister up against Lawford’s Paul Hewitt, Ian Sherwood and James Tindall.
The Tollgate G junior team of Toby Deng, Leon Huang and Andy Huang made light work of Gt Horkesley C’s Ian Carter, Hazel Hume and Roger Warren, 5-1.
Finally, Rowhedge H pulled off the double winning the John Welham Cup for the second consecutive year 5-3 thanks to Jamie Morgan, Chloe Andrews and beating Lawford D. The highlight of which was Andrews’ match clinching set against Ivan Jarred.
