With the Colchester Closed Tournament finished, players returned to their normal league duties last week with the end of the season not too far away. In Division Three, Tollesbury B are in a fierce battle with St James D for the much coveted top spot. St James were 6 points clear of Tollesbury before the start of the week, but with both teams playing each other in the week, it was Tollesbury’s chance to close the gap. Both teams fielded strong teams, however it was Tollesbury who ended the night happier. They thrashed St James D 8-2 (Martin Lewis winning a maximum) to move level on points with all to play for in the last few weeks of the season. At the other end of the table, Gilberd B recorded their first win of the season: a 6-4 victory over Pegasus F. This is little consolation for the Gilberd as they look certain to go down.
University of Essex A helped their chances of survival in the Premier Division by beating Pegasus A 7-3. Sam Cowan, ranked 77 in England, had another fine performance winning all three of his games. Gt Horkesley B might also have helped their chances of staying up after beating a two-man Tollgate B side 7-3. Wudong Liu finished the evening unbeaten for Gt Horkesley, whilst Daryl Lott (Tollgate) won his first match playing up in the top tier. Tollgate A beat Rowhedge A 7-3 to keep alive a slim hope of becoming champions.
Tollgate C all but secured their place in Division One for next season after whitewashing bottom of the table, Rowhedge F, 10-0. This result leaves Rowhedge 8 points from safety, having played a game more than third from bottom St James B. Walton B stay in second position after beating Gt Horkesley C 6-4. Kevin James won all three of his games for Horkesley.
In Division Two, Lawford A are now guaranteed promotion back into Division One with a comfortable 8-2 win over Gt Horkesley E.
