Top Drawer Performance by University of Essex Star Sam Cowan

Eighteen-year-old- Sam Cowan announced his arrival in Colchester winning his three against Tollgate A. He brushed aside Greg Green, Andy Warner and Colin Stallwood all in four ends and must even at this early stage pose a major threat in the Colchester Men's Singles. However, his side lost 7-3 despite his efforts. Previously Tollgate A had beaten Gt Horkesley B 10-0 with Steve Pennell winning three on debut. Their third recent win pitted them against Pegasus A where Steve Kerns emulated Cowan's performance winning his three in a 6-4 loss. Jane Li picked up two for Tollgate including the notable scalp of Ian Whiteside who went winless. Tollgate suffered their first defeat at Rowhedge C going down 6-4 with Rik James the star of the show winning his three. Highlight of the evening was his five set win over Andy Warner, a breathtaking game with some extraordinary rallies! Andy Dosher failed to trouble the scorers on his first game in Colchester in over ten years! Tollgate A sit in third place.

Gt Horkesley A head the table continuing their one hundred percent record with wins over Tollgate B 8-2, Rowhedge B 6-4 and Rowhedge A 7-3. Richard Goodhand and Jake Collins remain unbeaten but Paul Broxton suffered defeats to Nigel Hodder and David Moss.

Rowhedge C are second following big wins over Gt Horkesley B and Pegasus A. The first was 8-2 with Alan Burgess and Jermaine Fearon on form completing maximums, then they went one better beating Pegasus A 9-1 with Gary Young joining Fearon once again undefeated.

Fourth placed Rowhedge A were held to a 5-5 draw mainly due once again to Alan Burgess playing up for the B team. Gary Cattermole weighed in with two wins as did David Moss for the A team.

St James A have won two and lost two pick of which was a 7-3 defeat of Pegasus A with James Denyer inflicting Steve Kerns first defeat in three straight sets! The seaside team went down 6-4 however, to newly promoted UOE which could have been worse if Sam Cowan had not conceded his last match to Colin Webber as his team ran out of time due to University regulations of a 10:00pm finish! Matthew Horrocks impressed winning three with Cowan winning his other two singles.

Tollgate B recorded their first win, 6-4 at Rowhedge B with Nigel Hodder unbeaten coming back from two down to beat Gary Cattermole. There was a welcome return for Fred Button who won one, having got the all-clear from his Doctor the day previous. Hodder was also flawless against Rowhedge A as he took the doubles as well as all of his singles in a 4-6 loss.

Wudomg Liu is another in good form but without much support from his Gt Horkesley B team-mates as his team prop the table up. He picked up an excellent maximum against St James A in a 6-4 loss, Horkesley still looking for their first win!
