Dan Rhodes: Top win over Wudong Liu
Division Two is proving to be the most fascinating of all four Divisions of the Colchester & District Table Tennis League. Walton C head the table but having played ten means they have played more than most of their promotion rivals. Tollgate C are seventh and have pretentions of their own and the two fought out a 5-5 draw. Matt Watson remains unbeaten this season as he won three with John Stubbings and Mike Tracey picking up two for apiece for Tollgate. Tollgate ended a run of three defeats the previous week with an 8-2 success thanks mainly to Tracey senior, Paul, completing a maximum. Second placed St James B won by the same margin at H20 Rowhedge D with Andy Vincent and Terry May unbeaten. Third placed Tollesbury A leapfrogged Lawford A with another one-sided affair, winning 8-2. Ben Page and Patrick Gilbert lead the way, Page taking the player-of-the-match dropping just one set. Gt Horkesley C maintained their one hundred per cent record thanks to a Wudong Liu treble including a good four set win over the in-form Glen Laing who won two. They are fifth with three games in hand over the leaders. Shock of the week however, was Wudoing’s four set defeat by young Dan Rhodes, his best win so far but his H20 Rowhedge F team still went down 7-3 with Mike Emmerson undefeated for Horkesley. Rowhedge also lost by the same score line to Lawford B with Robert Wood on-song, winning his three.
The University of Essex have shot to the top of Division Three following a 10-0 trouncing of Lawford C. Matthew Horrocks looks to be a good acquisition as he won three without dropping a set with Nathan Nicol and Oliver Pink not far behind all unbeaten. Alastair Woodcock’s best efforts were in vain for Pegasus D as his team, despite his maximum went down 7-3 to Lawford C. CRGS already look doomed as the sit at the foot of the table, loosing heavily again this week, 10-0 at home to Pegasus C who move up two places to fifth. Nigel Parmenter, Tony Eversen and Barry Hayley all won without dropping a set with not even a deuce!
In Division Four the top two teams have nineteen wins out of twenty between them and they both recorded 10-0 wins yet again this week. Leaders by one point Tollgate D accounted for Pegasus G whilst Gilberd A who have a game in hand beat Lawford E. Third placed Dedham B were held to a 5-5 draw at Lawford D with John Colvin securing three good wins. Peter Giles won his sixth player-of-the match award in a 7-3 defeat for his H20 Rowhedge I team at Pegasus E. Terry Smyth achieved the same feat in another 7-3 defeat for Rowhedge against this time against Lawford B.
There are only two results from Division One this week with H20 Rowhedge beating Pegasus A 7-3 and St James A defeating a Gary Young-less Gt Horkesley B 9-1. Rob Bozier had a stunning win over one of the League’s most consistent players, Kevin Gowlett in four sets but it was left to the ever-reliable John Andrews to ensure his team won with three wins including an 11-9 fifth set win over Bozier. St James A are still an outside title bet and they won comfortably enough thanks to maximums from James Denyer and Colin Webber.
