The Chester and Ellesmere Port Table Tennis League is proud to announce that for the second time in 5 years it has won the coveted National Willmott Cup, a competition open to every league in the country. In the group stage our pairing of Shaun Hall and Tomasz Rzeszotko travelled to Leeds to play the hosts as well as Stockton from the north east and came away with brilliant 5 0 and 4 1 victories to reach the quarter finals in Northampton.
They then faced other group winners, Hastings, Leamington Spa and 2nd seeds Reading but once again came through to reach the grand final following some very competitive and high standard table tennis . Old foes and current holders, Sheffield, now awaited the Chester pairing and although we went 2 0 up they then lost the doubles, followed by Warren Li Kam Wa outpointing Rzeszotko in 5 sets to set up a final encounter between Shaun Hall and talented Michael Frazer. In a match described by onlookers as outstanding Sheffield went 2 games up and led the third before Chester struck back and eventually won the deciding 5 th game 11 9 to complete a fantastic victory. National Champions!
