TABLE TENNIS REPORT
The league had representative teams playing in various competitions over the weekend with mixed results.
The Veterans side travelled to Bolton to play Oldham in the Lancs/Cheshire handicap cup final and even though Tomasz Rzeszotko and Mark Pugh had to give a number of points start in each game they played, they were both unbeaten as the team triumphed 6-3.
On an adjoining table the open age squad of Aaron Beech, Neil Powell and Florin Barbus also faced Oldham in the final, and the Mancunians put out a strong teenage trio with higher handicaps than the Chester/E Port side which resulted in the match being tied at 4-4 before Barbus stepped up to win an enthralling decider to clinch the trophy.
At the weekend the league sent mens/ ladies teams to compete in the National Cup and they were both drawn in groups based in Leeds. As holders of this competition Tomasz Rzeszotko and Aaron Beech found themselves in an unbelievably tough group comprising Leeds, Leicester and last year's beaten finalists Sheffield ! They fought their way to hard fought victories over Leeds 3-2 and Leicester 4-1, but with Sheffield bringing in top player Matthew Dodd the final match proved too difficult for them and with only the group winners progressing our reign is over for the present.
The ladies team of Hannah Winfield and Suzanne Burgess lost to Derby but so did Leeds and with two teams progressing they had a slight chance when they faced the hosts. From 0-2 down the ladies took the doubles and then Hannah had a fine singles win, but the Leeds number 1 proved too strong and won the vital fifth game against Suzanne.
With the league also taking the Lancs/Cheshire Premier Division title this season the players can be very proud of their efforts.
