Tsaptsinos goes out in Nigeria

Maria Tsaptsinos missed out in a deciding seventh game as she fell in the first round of the Nigeria Open.

The English national women’s singles champion was seeded 13th for the event in Lagos and was seeded directly into the knockout stage.

There she faced India’s Pooja Sahasrabudhe, ranked No 460 in the world and it was a close match in which Tsaptsinos both led and trailed, before she levelled at three apiece to take it into a final game.

But the Indian prevailed 11-6 to complete a 4-3 (11-13, 12-10, 9-11, 11-7, 11-6, 5-11, 11-6) victory and move into the last 16.

Tsaptsinos is partnering Scotland’s Gavin Rumgay in the Mixed Doubles and they got through their last-16 tie by walkover against a pair from the Democratic Republic of Congo to set up a quarter-final against Cedric Nuytinck & Lisa Lung of Belgium, the third seeds, which they lost in four.

Rumgay won his Men’s Singles last-64 clash 4-0 against Kehinde Oladele of Nigeria but went out 4-2 to Soumyajit Ghosh of India in the round of 32.
