With the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League Season having reached it’s half way stage the 12 first division teams will now form two mini divisions and the teams will be looking forward to hearing who their fixtures are for the second half of the Season.

This week’s division one matches in the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League produced four close fought affairs and two 9-1 results. The leaders Maldon A predictably ran out 9-1 winners, against Rawreth after Trevor Lloyd and Alex Abbott had stayed undefeated.

The two main contenders (and it’s not unfair to say the only contenders) met this week in the first division of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League and their 5-5 draw means that Maldon A retain their six point lead over Chelmsford A. The match was a personal triumph for 2012 and 2013 M&G Investments Chelmsford Mens Singles Champion Alex Abbott who was on sparkling form and he won his three singles.

The A Team comprised of the Danbury players Ben Porter, Ewan Hynd and Sam Mortimer- Ford again whilst the B Team was the Chelmsford Club’s James Donald, Sudheep Kamma and Joachin Mapes.

Danbury B scored their first win of the Season in the first division of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League and their 7-3 victory over Hatfield Peverel A takes them out of the bottom two. With Gus Heath, Steve Buer and Chris Buer all winning twice they raced in to a 7-0 lead as nothing went Hatfield Peverel’s way-literally nothing at all !.

Danbury B - without a win in division one of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League turned in an excellent performance against third placed Rawreth and only missed out 6-4. This was largely down to their leading player - Daniel Young who won his three singles.

Maldon A are setting a very hot pace in division one of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League and 69 points out of 80- eight wins out of eight is a fair indication of their level of dominance so far. You wouldn’t normally expect a Danbury A side containing Gary Young and Dave Richardson to lose 10-0 but that was their fate against Maldon A this week.

It is with great sadness that the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League Committee have to report the death of Life Member Hill Dowsett, a Coach of over 40 years standing in Chelmsford and Essex. Hill died on Tuesday 18 October 2018, aged 81.

Liberal scored their third win of the Season in division one of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League. They beat Chelmsford B 8-2 after Adrian Pitt and Adam Buxton had both won their three singles. 8-2 doesn’t reflect the fact that six games were decided in the fifth end and Liberal won five of them.

Sadly we have to report the death of another former Table Tennis player from the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League. Roger Fuller, died aged 74 on Tuesday 30 October 2018 at Basildon Hospital where he had spent the last three weeks of his life.

The Bat & Chat sessions organised by Chelmsford City Council have moved to a new venue at Chelmsford Sport & Athletic Centre. Meeting on Thursdays from 10am till noon.

Chelmsford C might just be the surprise act in division two of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League. They made it six wins out of six by beating Danbury D 6-4. They displayed a “united front” to beat Danbury D 6-4. Waseem Qureshi, Mike Johnston and Wictor Delimat all won twice.

Scott Dowsett is one of the most stylish and enigmatic players in division one of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League and there can be little doubt what a good player he is when he hits top form. He was involved in three close games as his side - Hatfield Peverel A lost 3-7 to OCs A.

Alan Shepherd, a stalwart of table tennis in Middlesex and Essex, has died at the age of 89. Alan was an International Umpire (qualifying in 1975) and a National Referee. He officiated at the World Championships on home soil in 1977 and 1997.

Three weeks ago OCs A’s Paul Lucas made the head-lines with a top draw hat-trick against Maldon A. This week OCs A were in the news again - after suffering a shock 8-2 defeat against an inspired Chelmsford B. Homegrown 24 year-old Robert Shrimpton and newcomer Simon Jarvis - better known in the Harlow League were both on inspired form and both scored hat-tricks whilst the vastly experienced Neil Brierley picked up two wins.

The first division is firmly back in the spotlight this week in the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League. There were a number of strong performances and 14 year old Daniel Young led the way. He won all three singles as Danbury B lost 3-7 to Danbury A.

It takes a very strong performance to take the spotlight away from division one in the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League. Wiktor Delimat produced just that and more as he led Chelmsford C to an excellent 6-4 win over OCs B in division two.

The favourites Maldon A made it two wins out of two in the first division of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League by beating OCs A 7-3. But it was Paul Lucas, the M&G Investments Chelmsford Under 21 Singles Champion back in 2000 and 2001 who stole the show.

Eagle eyed observers will already have noted that the 2018/19 Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League includes a significantly revamped first division. After a lot of thought by the League Committee and with Fixtures Secretary Gordon Gatheral calling the shots the first division has been increased from eight to 12 teams.

Chelmsford A have been the dominant team in this year’s Central Essex Summer Table Tennis League first division. They scored wins four and five of a very successful campaign with a 5-0 victory over OCs A and a 4-1 win over Danbury A.

The Central Essex Summer Table Tennis League has proved to be really popular this year with six divisions - a sizeable increase. Rayne A are the early leaders in division one. Ian Whiteside and Steve Pennell excelled to beat Danbury A (Chris and Steve Buer) 5-0, a match that on paper looked pretty closely matched. Rayne won the three five-setters which undoubtedly gave them a real lift.

The 2017/18 Chelmsford Table Tennis League Season has been concluded. The Division Two Knock-Out Cup Final between the all conquering Writtle Excalibur A (unbeaten in 18 League matches) and OCs A (who had not enjoyed the best of Seasons in the League) produced a superb encounter, arguably one of the best Finals on record.

Chelmsford A (Wale Bada, Ryan Gooday and Eddie Ogbebor) are the 2018 winners of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League Open Knock Out Cup. They beat Danbury A 5-3 in a hard-fought Final with their top player Wale Bada clinching the victory by fighting back from 2-1 down to get the better of Gary Young 11-8, 6-11, 4-11, 11-9, 11-7.

Maldon are the 2018 winners of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League Ladies Knock Out Cup Final. Their team of Dawn Baldry, Kelly Yuenyongpknan and Shirley Carroll ran out 5-2 winners against Chelmsford. The big games here were the 5-11, 11-5, 11-7, 7-11, 11-8 win for Dawn Baldry against Jan Fuller and a superb 3-0 victory for Dawn and Kelly against Julie Johnson and Jan Fuller in the middle doubles.

Division two Champions Writtle Excalibur A completed their programme with a 6-4 victory over Danbury B, their fifteenth win of the Season . What appears to have been on paper a routine win was anything but. Writtle surged into a 6-0 lead but inexplicably lost the last four games.

Maldon A have retained their title in the first division title of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League. They achieved the feat in style by notching up their twelfth and thirteenth wins of the season. Trevor Lloyd (95%), Alex Abbott (90%), John Poysden (77%) and Colin Stalllwood (83%) all played their part in a campaign where it was clear from the outset that Maldon were the team to beat.

The bottom of the table action in division three of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League saw Hatfield Peverel C beat Danbury F 8-2 - a result that probably consigns Danbury F to relegation. Bob Garson was the Hatfield Peverel match winner and he beat John Robinson (12-10, 9-11, 11-5, 11-3) and Dave Marsh (9-11, 9-11, 12-10, 11-7, 11-8).

Reece Seddon was on top form for Rawreth in division one of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League. His hat-trick enabled Rawreth A to beat Chelmsford A 8-2. Included in his three wins was a 8-11, 11-7, 14-12, 11-8 win over Wal Bada - the best of the Chelmsford players and Seddon’s Doubles partner in his Mens Doubles success at the 2017 M&G Investments Chelmsford Closed Championships.

The match between second-placed Danbury A and Liberal B in division one of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League was a cracker. Five games were decided in the fifth end and Liberal B ran out 6-4 winners. Paul Davison sealed the Liberal victory with a 12-14, 13-11, 16-14, 9-11, 12-10 win over Dave Richardson.

The M&G Investments Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League Finals Night at Old Chelmsfordians Association on Monday 12 February 2018 saw Duncan Taylor crowned as Mens Singles Champion for the first time whilst 16 year old Gracie Edwards was a very worthy first time winner of the counter part Ladies Singles.

Daniel Richardson, who played for Danbury TTC, was just 25 years old when he died on 21 January 2018 after an 18 month battle with cancer.
