National Junior League Report - 24 November 2018

The second round of North London Region National Junior League matches for 2018/19 was held at Ellenborough TTC, Enfield on Saturday 24 November 2018. After the first round of matches Chelmsford A shared points top position in Division 2 with Twickenham Brunswick A although they had only won one match to Twickenham’s three. As for the B Team they led Division 4 by one point over Fusion TTC 2. Each Divisional pair of matches shared three tables.

The A Team comprised of Aidan Noguchi, Charlie Craig and Harry Buckle who had now recovered from his injury. The B Team were Vineeth Kamma, Sudheep Kamma and Harry Chivers.

The A Team’s first match was against Elmgreen DTTC, a team that they had narrowly lost 5-4 to in the first round of matches. Juan, Danner and Emilio were again their team. Aidan again lost to Emilio but he did take the opening game off him this time. Harry came back from two games down to beat Juan but for Charlie it was the opposite, another five games match with Danner which he lost 11-9 in the decider having won 12-10 in the decider last time. The rest of the matches were all won 3-0 but only Harry could achieve a win, this over Danner. The 7-2 defeat meant that the team dropped to bottom place but only two points behind the new leaders Ellenborough B in what is the closest Division of the four.

Their next match was against Twickenham Brunswick A, who now had Luca Chan instead of Morgan Wilkins playing with Harshil Shah and Arya Lim Amhi. Throughout the match there was no more than one difference in the score line. Aidan avenged his previous four game defeat with a hard won five game defeat of Harshil 12-10, 13-15, 11-9, 7-11, 11-7 in the opening match. Harry took on Arya but lost 3-1 and then Charlie’s 3-0 win over Luca gave the team the lead. On the other table Harshil was involved in another five game match, this time with Harry, and Harry lost this 11-8 in the deciding game. A quick fire 3-0 win for Aidan over Luca (unusual for Aidan) renewed the slim lead. With Charlie losing 3-1 to Arya Harry’s 3-0 win over Luca gave the team the lead once again. Alas the last two matches were both lost 3-1, Charlie to Harshil and for Aidan agony when saving three match points from 7-10 down against Arya only to lose the game point at 12-11 up to a fine edge with a deciding game in sight for a possible team win. He lost that match 11-13, 10-12, 11-8, 12-14 and with it the team match 4-5, the same score line as on the first day. The Table looked even more interesting now with three teams on 23 points and Chelmsford on 21.

The final match of the day was against Ellenborough B who they had beaten 7-2 a month ago. Emily Ravetto again played but now the other players were Victor Ostapenko and Millie Flanagan. Not a good start as Aidan lost 3-1 to Victor although I would have expected this result. Harry and Charlie won their matches against Emily and Millie both 3-0 and then Harry had a great win, 8, 7, 10 over Victor. He will be well pleased with that one. Aidan, after winning the first two games easily, struggled to win the third game and eventually 15-13 against Millie whilst Charlie took five games to beat Emily on the other table. Winning the first two 12-10 he then lost the next two 11-8 so a discussion on tactics followed. All went well until the umpire should have called “ends” and with the reminder the change was made at 6-1 to Charlie. With a loss of concentration and a serve in to the net at 6-6 did not help but somehow he managed to win five of the next six points to win the match 11-8. Discussions do eventually work sometimes. The last three matches were all won 3-1, Harry defeating Millie and Aidan winning his last two games 12-10 to beat Emily. Charlie lost his match with Victor so a 7-2 win which lifted the team up to second place. The Table shows what a tight Division this is. Elmgreen DTTC started the day in fourth place and finished top whilst Twickenham Brunswick A who started equal top are now bottom and both teams have won four of their six matches.

DIVISION 2 TABLE

Elmgreen DTTC                      6          4          2          31

Chelmsford A                          6          2          4          28

Twickenham Brunswick A     6          4          2          24

The B Team‘s first opponents were Mossford 3 who they beat 7-2 last time when Mossford only had two players but they had a full team this time. Vineeth, Sudheep and Harry roared in to a 6-0 lead, the first three matches won 3-0 against Kenneth Lan, who played last time, Arjun Thasarathakumar and Shivan Subudhi respectively. The second three were a little harder, Sudheep needed five games to beat Kenneth whilst both Vineeth and Harry lost their first games 12-10 and went on to win the next three. Against Shivan Sudheep went 2-1 up but lost the last two games to 6 and Vineeth and Harry both won their matches for the 8-1 win.

The Team then played Twickenham Brunswick C who they beat 7-2 in the first round of matches. Twickenham had Louis McPhee and Sihao Zhou again and Adam Gold who was to give the Chelmsford players their toughest matches. Vineeth beat Adam 9, 8, 7 and on the other table Sudheep beat Louis 3-0. Harry then had to play Sihao who he lost to in the deciding game last time. Losing the second game to 9 he went on to win the fourth game 11-1, no doubt pleased to turn the score line around. Harry then had to play Adam in what became an alternating match but eventually won -6, 9, -8, 9, 8 and he went on to beat Louis 3-1 having won the first game 11-0. Vineeth won his other two matches both 3-0. Meanwhile Sudheep had beaten Louis 3-0 but his toughest match of the day was to come when he played Adam. Five games later he had won 11, -9, 9, -12, 8. A 9-0 win with a five point lead over next opponents Fusion TTC 2.

Fusion again played Mohammed Ahmed and Felix Jones and were joined by Matthew Smith. A good start with Vineeth and Sudheep both winning their matches 3-0 against Matthew and Felix respectively although Sudheep’s win was 12-10, 13-11, 11-8. Harry lost to Mohammed 3-0 and he went on to lose to Felix 11-8 in the deciding game after leading 2-0. Meantime Sudheep had beaten Matthew 3-0 but lost his last match to Mohammed 3-1. With Vineeth also losing 3-1 to Mohammed the match score went from 3-1 up to 3-4 down. However Harry and Vineeth both won their last matches 3-0 to give the team a 5-4 win, the score line the same as that when they played one another a month ago.
