Cambridge & District Table Tennis League Tournament 2016
This year’s tournament was again held at the Fulbourn Centre and was sponsored by the Lion and Lamb at Milton. The day produced some closely fought matches and some surprises in a day of high quality Table Tennis.
The open singles provided the first shock when the unseeded Chingis Kuanyshev defeated last season’s champion, Daniel Fielding in five games in the group stages which resulted in Fielding being placed in the same section of the draw as number one seed Adam Jepson. Fielding fought his way back into contention reaching the semi-final against Jepson which turned out to be a fluctuating match with both players attacking at will with some very fast and furious rallies. However, with the match poised at 2-2 Jepson finally pulled away to win 11-6 in the fifth. In the second semi-final the impressive Kuanyshev proved to be too strong for the seventh seed Paul Hillier winning comfortably in four games.
In the final, the spectators were then treated to the best match of the day with more attacking table tennis from both players. Jepson took an early hold on the match winning the first two games 6 & 11 before Kuanyshev came back to take the third to 9. Jepson then looked to have the match in the bag at 7-3 ahead in the fourth game but lost his concentration to allow Kuanyshev back into the match to take the game 13-11 and level the match at 2-2. The fifth game was a reversal of the fourth with Kuanyshev taking a 7-4 lead but Jepson fought back to lead 10-9 before his opponent gained a lucky edge to take it to deuce. With several deuce points played in a nerve ending finish Jepson finally edged in front 15-13 to take the title.
In the group stages of the ladies singles unseeded Margaret Chambers with her steady defensive style beat top seed Charlotte Boston to win her group and ensure a place in the semi-final. In the other group third seed Carrie Cope defeated second seed Georgina Lister to also top her group. In the semi-finals Cope overcame Boston whilst Lister went on to beat Chambers.
In the final Lister gained revenge for her group defeat be beating Cope 3, -8,7 & 7 to take her first title.
The men’s doubles went with the seeding’s with top seeds Shaun Murray and Adam Jepson meeting number two seeds James Kelly and Steven Gray. This was another very close affair with each pair exchanging games before Murray and Jepson took control of the fifth game to 8 to give Jepson his second title of the day.
In the ladies doubles holders Charlotte Boston and Georgina Lister retained their title with victory over Carrie Cope and Tracey Sambrook in four games, 5, -9, 13,& 12.
The mixed doubles saw Paul Hillier and Carrie Cope overcome James Kelly and Charlotte Boston in another five game match just winning 11-9 in the fifth. Chingis Kuanyshev won the Junior Boys singles beating Zachary Martillo in the final, 5,9,-12,6 whilst in the Junior Girls Georgina Lister reversed last year’s result by defeating Charlotte Boston in 4 games to win her third title of the day.
In another reversal from last year, in the veterans, the wily second seed Kevin Gray put in a dogged defensive display to nullify the attacking style of top seed Ronald Cron to win in straight games, 9,7 &7.
The handicap singles final was won by Wayne Stevens who with +30 points start proved too much for Kevin Gray (-15) to pull back. Zachary Martillo made up for losing the Boys Singles title by coming back from two games down to beat Tom Lodziak -6,-6,4,5,& 9. In the final event of the day Paul Hillier also won his second title of the day when he teamed up with Emily Brown to win the drawn doubles 9,7 & 5 against Tom Lodziak and Peters Zivtins.
