Colebridge Tomahawks v Barnt Green - in both Cup and League

COLEBRIDGE TOMAHAWKS v BARNT GREEN - by Neil Wheatley.

With two matches in five days against Bromsgrove/Redditch League Champions, Barnt Green, spectators at the Theatre of Dreams were guaranteed a feast of attacking table tennis. Tomahawks were represented by Division 1 Individual Champion Awais Muhammed, Rod Lewis and Jake Crawshaw. For the Cup match, Barnt Green fielded Jerzy Kucharek, Jack Zhao and Yuking Shen.

First up was Thursday’s Clement Bros Cup quarter-final. With Awais and Rod in fine form following their recent Senior British League success, the result was never in doubt, the home team romping home 7-2. The highlights were a five game battle between Awais and Jerzy, with the hard hitting visitor just failing to gain a second success of the season over his younger rival, and Jake Crawshaw’s best result to date, when he defeated Jack in another closely fought set.

Monday’s final Division 1 League match was played in similar vein, although the visitors were handicapped by the absence of a third player. Awais v Jerzy was again the highlight, although it looked otherwise when Awais swept to an 11-7, 9-0 lead. Incredibly, Jerzy fought back to level the score and it was nip and tuck thereafter, before Awais ran out the winner 17-15, 11-8. Awais went on to overpower Jack, as did Rod Lewis, but Jake was unable to recapture the form he showed in the Cup match and was well beaten by both visitors. Rod started well against Jerzy taking a two game lead, but ran out of steam against his opponent’s relentless attacking, mixed with clever tactics. The match then concluded with Awais and Rod in a doubles also notable for wild score swings, as indicated by the result 5-11, 11-3, 4-11, 11-9, 8-11, leaving the home team with  6-4 win

Our thanks go to both teams for two exciting but friendly encounters and congratulations to Barnt Green on yet another table-topping season.
