Cardiff City and BATTS set the pace in the pursuit of Premier British League with wins in the opening round.
The two sides defeated York Garden Angels and Greenhouse respectively to claim victories and open a small gap at the start of the weekend.
Cardiff were comfortable in victory as they overcame York 7-1. The Welsh outfit raced into a 5-0 lead before Brian Li managed a small consolation for York with a five set victory over Yangbo Zhang. However, Simon Nouth and Paddy Thomas claimed to next two sets to secure doubles to go alongside Wiktor Dzwonkowski’s two wins to seal a comprehensive victory.
Meanwhile, young star Ethan Walsh set Cippenham Table Tennis Club alight with a fantastic display in BATTS’ 5-3 win over Greenhouse. The youngster secure two crucial wins that ultimately sealed victory for his side after teammate Jack Bennett and family members; dad Jimmy and brother Luke, all recorded a win apiece. The game was left in the balance at 3-2 when Luke lost to Tony Wilkinson, who Ethan had previously beat. However, Jack Bennett’s five set victory over Daniel Basterfield, followed by Ethan’s comfortable win over Ovigwe Eyarhano, secured victory, despite Joseph Langham-Ferreira winning two matches after coming from 2-0 down against Jimmy Walsh.
