The British League’s elite are set to commence in battle for the first time in the calendar year as all eight teams gather in the capital for one day of table tennis at London Acamdemy today.
Despite just two rounds of fixtures taking place, this particular date in the calendar tends to be significant come the end of the season as the run in begins towards the conclusion of the campaign.
Despite Chris Doran ruled out of competition due to his participation in the World Championships of Ping Pong, there remains a wealth of talent across all the teams.
With Sycamore and Ormesby in stalemate at the top of the division, the latter’s performances could be pivotal if they want to dethrone Sycamore come the end of the season. Fixtures against Barrow and Fusion shall be tough, and with Sycamore unlikely to drop points against the league’s two bottom sides Bournemouth or Kingfisher, it is imperative that Darius Knight’s side leave with two wins.
Meanwhile, the chasing pack of Drumchapel, London Academy and Barrow shall continue to jostle for third spot, with LVA going up against both of their mid-table rivals in what promises to be two intriguing affairs.
A tough looking weekend for Bournemouth, who go up against Bournemouth and Drumchapel, gives Kingfisher and Fusion an opportunity to create distance from the league’s bottom side, and with the pair going up against each other Sunday afternoon, that result could go a large way to determining who shall survive come the end of the season.
As ever, the British League media team shall be in full swing for the day, with regular updates on the website and Twitter, @BritishLeague
