English pair lose out to seeds in Italy

James Smith and Naphat Boonyaprapa were both knocked out by opponents near the top of the seedings in the last 64 of the Junior Boys’ Singles at the Italy Junior & Cadet Open.

Smith was up against Kay Stumper of Germany, the fourth seed, while Boonyaprapa faced seventh-ranked Dimitrije Levajac of Serbia and both were defeated in four straight to end English involvement in the individual Junior events. The team events begin on Friday.

The pair set up their ties on Wednesday when they got through the group stage as runners-up and won their first-round ties in Lignano.

Sam Wilson also came through his group but was defeated in the first round by Erik Huzsvar of Hungary, while Shayan Siraj and Ethan Walsh went out in the groups, Walsh the victim of a three-way countback for second place.

In the doubles, Smith & Walsh got through their first match but were then beaten by the second seeds from China, while Siraj & Wilson also reached the last 32, where they were eliminated by the 16th seeds, a Finland-USA combination.

In the girls’ events, only Megan Gidney was able to win a group match as she, Millie Rogove and Amy Marriott went out.

Gidney, playing alongside Joanna Sung of the USA in the doubles, got through the first round but then ran into the top seeds, the Wegrzyn sisters from Poland, in the last 32 and were beaten by the European Under-21 silver medallists from earlier this month. Marriott & Rogove were defeated in the first round by the 17th-ranked pair.
