The youth Brentwood tournament was on 18th April at Writtle from 6:30, the second year running
we have had a youth tournament but this year more entries and more events than previously.
The U12, U14, U16 events were best of 3 with U18, U21 and U21 doubles best of 5.
The evening begun at 6:30 with the Under 12 event which had 5 entries and saw 3 play their first
competitive game ever. It is great to see the boys start young and the entries were Oscar, Aiden,
Harry, Freddie and Ben. Aiden won a close encounter with Oscar 11-8 in the fifth while in the other
group Harry collected 2 wins over Ben and Freddie. Ben lead against Freddie who came back well
to win the last 11-8 and collect the win.
The semi final was an all Hutt game as brothers Oscar and Harry played with Harry winning 11-5, 11-8. The other semi final was another close match with Freddie beating Aiden 15-13 and 11-9 in close ends.
The final was a great match between Harry and Freddie with many great shots, it finished with Harry winning 11-8, 11-5 to win his first table tennis event. Congratulations to all the boys who entered this event!
We then moved onto the Under 14 event in which we had 4 groups as Jason, Daniel, Zach, Toby,
Chris and James G all joined the under 12 entrants. Group A saw Jason as group winner with Daniel
runner up, Group B was Zach as winner and Harry as runner up. Group C had Toby as winner with
Oscar runner up and the final group with James G winning that group with Chris runner up. This
event then went into a quarter final with Toby, James G, Jason and Zach all winning their games to
progress into the semi finals.
Toby beat James G and Jason beat Zach although both games were close with James losing 11-9 in the 2nd end and Zach 11-8, 11-9 with Jason. The final was another tight encounter with Jason narrowly missing out to Toby 11-9, 11-8 to see Toby as Under 14 winner and Jason as runner up.
The Under 16 had 3 groups of 3 with the winner from each group progressing to the semi final with the best runner up. Group A was Toby, Harry and Chris and with Toby winning his matches, Harry played Chris in the final group game with Harry winning in 3 ends 11-7, 7-11, 11-8. Group B was Daniel, Zach and James H with Zach winning twice to finish as winner and James H beating Daniel in the 3rd to come runner up. Jason was the winner of group C defeating both James G and Tom but with Tom winning his final game in 2 ends progressed as best runner up.
In the first semi final Toby beat Jason 11-4, 11-4 and Tom defeated Zach 11-4, 11-9 to have a final between Tom and Toby. This was probably the closest match of the event and a great final to watch, Toby too the first game 11-6 before Tom pulled it level winning 11-9 and Toby just held his nerve in a close last end winning
11-8. Well done to all entrants in the Under 16 event, especially the two for putting on a great final and Toby for winning both U14 and U16 events.
Our next event was the U18 event which was now best of 5 ends, Liam from Selex joining James H, Tom, Toby, Daniel and Zach from Buttsbury. Liam progressed to the final with wins over Daniel and Tom in 3 but Daniel had a great encounter with Tom winning 13-15, 11-5, 11-6, 9-11, 11-8 to come runner up. James H beat Zach in 3 which went the other way in the U16 section but Toby edged out James winning 11-9, 11-4, 14-12 and beating Zach to top the group. Another final for Toby but this final with Liam will be played on 2nd May at Finals night in Basildon. Good luck to both in their final.
There were 4 entrants into the U21 singles with Louis B from Buttsbury and Peter W from Writtle joining U18 finalists Toby and Liam. With everyone playing each other in 1 group and the 2 with most wins progressing to the final again for finals night. Liam defeated Toby in 3 before Peter beat Louis also in 3. There was some excellent table tennis being played by all thoughout the night but the level in U21 event went up again when Liam played Louis, with the scores at 1-1, Liam won the third and fourth end both 11-8. Peter and Liam both had an excellent game with many watching with interest as Peter battled from 2-0 down to get back to 2-2. Liam hit some excellent winners in the fifth as it finished 11-6. Peter beat a tired Toby who was playing non stop all night in 3 ends to finish runner up in the group. Liam will meet Peter in the final which will be a classic game suitable for finals night. Good luck to both.
U21 final - Liam Squirrel beat Peter Windley 8-11, 11-5, 11-7, 11-6
Our last event of the night was the U21 doubles event which had 4 pairs entering. Peter/Harry were 2 up against Jason/Daniel in the first semi final before the later pair got it back to 2-2 to set up a fifth end decider to reach the final. Peter/Harry clinched the 5th end 11-4 to progress to the final.
Louis/Liam both of the prem division in Brentwood won their semi final game 4,8,4 against Toby/Zach to meet Peter/Harry in the final. The final was a great spectical with Harry aged 10 deserving massive credit playing against people twice his age in the final. A game which had many excellent shots throughout from all players as Louis/Liam were doubles champions winning 11-7, 11-3, 11-7.
Well done to all the youngsters that entered the events, it was great to see more than last year and
hopefully we will see more again for next year. The standard and attitude of all players throughout
the night was a credit to them and their clubs.
Massive thanks go to Matthew Brown for setting up such a great venue with 4 tables up and to Keith Cullen who gave up the evening to help with the organisation of the events and scoring throughout the night.
