Bolton News 19th April - Finals and Presentation Night
Last week the season culminated with the Finals and Presentation Night. Trophies were presented to the runners up and winners of the Divisions by Ian Wheeldon who had been a previous Match Secretary for thirteen years. Also presented were the runners up and winners of the Cup competitions and cheques to the winners of the Individual Divisional Championships. All these have previously been reported on in previous weeks.

In addition Top Ten medals were presented to those who had won the most games over the season. Stephen Scowcroft was top in the Premier Division, Dennis Collier and Brett Haslam tied for Division 1 followed by Matthew Fishwick in Division Two, Peter McCormick for Division Three and Steven Gao in Division Four.

Special prizes chosen by the Committee were the Albert Howcroft Trophy for the most improved player of the season which went to Hilton J’s Nathan Donaldson. The Ralph Palmer Trophy for the most promising junior was difficult to split and was awarded to both Hilton I’s Steven Gao and Jai Makino. All these were division four players. The Rupert de Riggs Plate for assistance to junior players went to Brian Young.

The rest of the program consisted of the end of the Closed Championships which could have easily been renamed the Charles Musa show. The junior singles had been played the week before as a round robin event with Stephen Gao runner up to the winner Max Brooks. Also the Handicap Vets for the +60s had also been played as a round robin with long term player John Scowcroft just ousting Derek Watmough by two sets to get runner up, but losing out to the winner Bob Bent.

The first match played on the night, was the Level Vets Singles for the +40’s. Charles Musa took on Stephen Scowcroft. Scowcroft won out in three sets 11-1, 11-8, 11-6. This was followed by the level singles semi-finals. Majid Tubasum played Charles Musa with Musa winning 11-7, 11-8, 15-13. The next semi had Flixton’s Stephen Scowcroft taking on fellow club compatriot Tony Worthington in a really tough five setter in which Scowcroft eventually got the better of 9-11,11-7, 11-5, 9-11, 11-4.

Next we were entertained by the Handicap Doubles which was a close affair with Charles Musa & Paul Brandwood overcoming Peter McCormick & Sam Greenhalgh 5-11, 12-10, 11-7, 13-11. Then it was the Level Doubles that took stage. This time it was Charles Musa & Paul Brandwood against Majid Tubasum and Khamal Hussain from the winners of the Premier Division Premier, Ramsbottom Cricket Club. This was a thrilling five setter although you felt that there would be a certain inevitability in the result in the end. The Ramsbottom duo ran out winners 11-8, 11-7, 7-11, 6-11, 11-2.

In the Handicap Singles Charles Musa took stage again against Mohammed Sagied. Musa took it 11-8, 11-7, 7-11, 11-5.

At the end of the evening it was the Level Singles final with Charles Musa and Stephen Scowcroft in a virtual action replay of the Level Vets Singles + 40s. Scowcroft once again ran out the winner 11-6, 11-9, 11-13, 11-8.
