Warburton Cup marred by walk overs

Last week saw a break from normal league play as it was the first round of the Warburton Cup. This cup competition involves all the teams in the league competing on a handicap basis with each player playing four games against their opponents and all points contributing to a final score. This year as an experiment, taken from the BSF Tennis League, it was decided to split the league into two halves for the earlier rounds to avoid top teams coming into contact with bottom teams early on.

There are a lot of byes in this first round resulting in only nine matches listed to play. In the top half of the draw there were two walk overs due to lack of available players. Flixton A conceded to BRASS A putting them into the next round. Ramsbottom Cricket Club also conceded to Burning Desire enabling them to move to the next round. Little Lever B from Division 1 played Division Two’s Meadow Ben B who had a start of 65.5. Despite this Little Lever ran out winners 389 – 368.5. Ladybridge A had a late bye due to Heaton A opting out a number of weeks ago and we have one result to come in.

In the bottom half of the draw there was an improvement, although Farnworth SC C had a walkover against juniors Hilton J who were unable to raise a team due to the half term holiday. Division Three’s Meadow Ben C who were assisted by a 65.5 start ran out winners against Division Two’s Boyzone 435.5 – 311. Division Two’s Bolton TTC A overcame Top Spinners from Division Three. Despite a start of 65.5 for the Spinners Bolton TTC A clinched it 352 – 346.5. There was a very close match between two Division Two teams, second placed Hilton D played third from the bottom Ladybridge B who had a 72.5 start with Hilton D just taking it 368.5-367.

Having completed the first round 32 teams will now compete in round two to be played in the week commencing January 2nd.
