Meadow Ben have cup success as league season heats up

Last week we had another rest from league matches as this time it was the turn of the Divisional Cups first round. Since it was the first round, there were the usual large number of byes and just a handful of cup matches taking place to report on.

In the Brian Gittins Cup, which involves teams from the Premier and Division One, there were already two walkovers as Wingates gave Wharton a walkover and Hilton A conceded to Ramsbottom Town B. This left Ramsbottom Town A at home to Hilton C who had a start of 156.5. Despite this, Ramsbottom took the match 396-301.5.

In the George Yates Trophy, which involves teams from Divisions Two and Three, Meadow Ben C took full advantage of their 121.5 start to beat Hilton D 416.5-374.

In the Ron Hindle Trophy consisting solely of teams from Division 4, another Meadow Ben team had success. The D team with just a 37.5 start came out winners against a two man Irlam Steel side 365.5-237. Also, in an all club affair, junior team Hilton J with a 44.5 start overcame their H team 359.5-346.

The second round, when many more teams will be involved, will take place in the week commencing 16th January.

Meanwhile, this week we have the penultimate week of league matches in the first half of the season. Many eyes will be on the Premier Division where we have the first showdown between the top two teams Flixton A and Ramsbottom Cricket Club. The following week sees the third placed Ramsbottom Town A face Flixton A.
