Hamstead A are strong favourites to retain the Premier Division title in the 2011/12 Birmingham League, with their consistent trio of Steve and Lester Bertie and Nabil Khalfey. Colebridge Aces will again provide the main challenge, with their large squad of talented players led by Warwickshire No.1 Ian Ferguson and rising star Amann Ubhi. Navinder Matharu is back from university to boost the Aces’ squad, with their title hopes resting on how much ‘Fergie’ is available.
Smiths Wood A have recruited former Irish international Pat Glynn, who will be an unknown quantity after many years out of the sport. At his peak Glynn was a class act, making his mark in the Desmond Douglas era. Alasdhair Broadbent teams up with Paul Hancox and Adrian Jones for Smiths Wood B. Former Birmingham and Warwickshire champion Radek Mlynarczyk, Mark Brookes and Carl Morgan are included in the Hamstead B squad. Promoted Colebridge Braves have a plethora of players registered in the top flight, including the vastly experienced Michael Rinnhofer, Worcestershire No.1 Kate Hughes and British Police champion Melanie Farquhar. Martin Round will lead the other promoted side, Sutton A, who will be hard-pressed to hold on to their place in the section. Beaufort Sports again have two teams in action and Jon Ludlow and Jack Williamson will be a stern test for the top sides, representing Beaufort A, while Rob Sheldon and England junior-ranked Jessica Birbeck lead the B-team challenge. Terry Cooper makes a welcome return to the top flight with Streetly A but the yo-yo side will do well to escape the drop.
