Club Competition 27-05-21

Just five days after re-opening the doors to table tennis players, the Bexhill club restarted its Team Competition, picking up where we left off some six months ago when the latest lockdown started.

Matches restarted on Thursday 27th May with some minor alterations in personnel to most teams. Joint leaders Rose & Two Thorns moved clear at the top of the table with a 6-3 defeat of Slovakquickdust, thanks to a maximum from Tony Catt and two wins from Rose Rainton. The Rose/Thorns combination were 2-1 down but never looked back after Catt’s excellent win over Martin Kapusta, who won two for the Slovaks.

Match of the week saw Ballbashers move into second place and ahead of their opponents TT Allstarz with a 6-3 win in which 6 sets required a decider. Perhaps fittingly, no player notched a maximum with the Bashers trio of Ryan Heselden, Nick Coleman and Kevin McEwan all winning twice, as did Arthur Bracken for the losers.  Kent junior Bracken was making his debut in the competition, as was McEwan, with the latter winning in three games in the battle of the newbies.

Ivory Rose had a comfortable 7-2 win over Bats Atoxic, with Graham Gillett unbeaten and two wins for Pete Robinson and Alan McCleave.  Roger Pingram scored both wins for the Toxics, as the only player in their line-up with anything approaching a toxic bat.

Winter Mixtures are joint second after a 7-2 win over Going Down with maximums from Nathan Darby and Andy Panayi.  At 2-4 down, GD still had a chance of respectability before Pam Winter beat John Ellis and Panayi beat Andy Chapman,  both in three games.
