Chronicle Report 6th Oct 2017

The 2017/18 season got underway with a new scoring system in place; giving precedence to games rather than sets won. However, last season’s Premier division top two are likely to be challenging for honours once more, and there was little to choose between them in their first encounter. Champions Chippenham A edged out their own B team by 21 games to 18 with sets shared. The B team’s Alex Kearney was the only player to capture the full 9 points on offer, with Andy Cox (4) and Scott Cooper (2) also contributing for his team. Gary Baldwin (8) Jerry Musselwhite (6) and Terry Parkins (5) earned points for the A team.

Newly promoted and strengthened Oldfield D got off to a good start by beating Bathford B by 25 games to 13 with Charlie Joyce the man of the match with 9 games to his name. Ali Pearson (8) and Dan Rider (6) supported him well. Josh Kashdan-Brown fared best for Bathford with 5 games and Jon Foulds (3) and Steve Husbands also chipped in.

Bathford C’s home match against Oldfield E in division 1 ended in a narrow home win by 19 games to 16. William Avery stole the show with a maximum for the hosts and Colin Thomas added a further 7 games. Oldfield’s points were earned by Brian Neathey (6) Mike Newton (5) and Greg Burridge (4).

Bear Flat A beat Radstock B by 25 games to 14 away from home with Paul Green starting the campaign with a customary maximum. Andy Steady and Justin Johnstone added 7 and 6 singles points respectively for the visitors, whilst Wayne Button (7) Mark Bennetts (3) and Paul Crocker (2) replied for the home team.

Bathford D shaded a tight division 2 contest with Oldfield F at Monkton Combe by 20 games to 16, as Richard Wickham and Russell Cole carded sevens and Julian Kashdan-Brown added 3 points. Lee Bailey led the way for the hosts with 8 games, with Colin Dowding (7) and Paul Harris completing their tally.

A very strong Chippenham D team of Tom Griffiths, Jim Wheeler, and Steve Deeble comprehensively beat Bathford E away, inflicting the first 30-0 whitewash under the new rules.
