Chronicle Report 5th May 2016

Two of the three cup finals were played last week. The KO Cup final was an all Chippenham affair with the A team taking on the B team and winning by five games to two. A treble from Jerry Musselwhite and an unbeaten brace from Gary Baldwin ensured that the Premier League champions retained the KO Cup and thereby completed the league and cup double for the third year running. The tie was effectively decided in a very close fourth game between Musselwhite and Andy Cox, which Musselwhite came from behind to win in 5 sets. This meant that the two games won by Cox and Alan Feltham against Roy Cary were not enough to extend the contest beyond game seven.

The Handicap Cup final between holders Oldfield C and Yatton Keynell B was an altogether closer contest, reflecting some apparently inspired handicapping. This tie did go the distance, and with 5 games settled in a deciding third set. First Division Yatton came back from a 3-0 deficit to level 3-3, and again from 4-3 down, to edge the contest 5-4. Richard Terrell and Steve Richardson both claimed pairs, and Mark Terrell a single game, for the winners. Paul Redman won two games, and Nigel Dagger and Jim Stevens one each, for an Oldfield team that certainly fought hard to retain the cup.

Two important re-arranged league matches were played in the Premier Division. Oldfield C lost 6-4 at Bristol Civil Service and now need to take at least 9 points from their final match in order to pip Bathford A to the runners-up spot. Robin Kendal starred for the hosts with a maximum, and further points were earned by Andy Cooper (2) and Chris Adamek. Paul Redman (2) and Jim Stevens won games for Oldfield.

At the other end of the table Yatton Keynell A beat two-man Key Centre A 9-1 away from home to escape the relegation zone at the death – swopping places with Oldfield B. Jamie Smith and Keith Holland both won hat-tricks for the visitors, with Paul Drage adding a brace. Matthew Rowland registered the Centre’s single point.
