Week 23 Report

Premier Division

Northlands Park 'B' could only field 2 players for their match against a strong Basildon 'A' side and a 9/1 win for Basildon was no surprise.  Liam Squirrell and Daniel Bronziet were both unbeaten for Basildon and they then combined to win the doubles.  Ian Wall added another 2 wins but went down in straight sets to Neal Barker.

Selbourne were another side short of a player when they took on Maylands Green, but 2 wins for Kevin Read and a single from Charles Sweeny plus a doubles win made the final score 6/4 in Maylands favour.  Jordan Alan won both his games for Maylands but was made to work hard in his win over Charles before emerging a 10-12, 11-9, 7-11, 11-9, 12-10 winner.  Chris Penrose added another win for Maylands but just lost out in the deciding set against Kevin.

Finally, Hockley 'B' were unable get out a team for their match against Northlands Park 'A' and conceded the points accordingly.

Division 1

This week saw the change of match format for Divisions 1 and 2.

The Basildon 'derby' between the 'C' and 'B' teams was a tight affair with a number of close games.  The end result was a 6/3 win for Basildon 'B'.  Lin Roff was the stand out player on the night, winning both of her singles and doubles.  Garry Hartgrove and Robert Kemp each added a singles win for the league leaders.  For Basildon 'C' there were wins for Colin Clements over Robert (12-10 in the 5th) and for Chudi Ukpaka, a notable victory over Garry, only his second defeat of the season.  It was a blank night for Malcolm Henstock but he fought hard against Robert before eventually falling just short at 8-11, 12-10, 12-10, 10-12, 8-11.

Gus Heath and John Tendler were in good form for COYS as they overcame Basildon 'D' 7/2.  They were both unbeaten in their singles, with Wayne Farmer also adding a singles win, although he was pushed all the way by Ash Sivanandam before winning 10-12, 17-15, 11-6, 12-14, 11-9.  Bob Skews picked up a point for Basildon with a 5th set win over Wayne and he and Ash combined to win the final doubles.

Stanford 'A' were 5/4 winners over Hadleigh Forum.  It was a good team performance from Stanford with Pete Weatherall, Pat White and Ian Sangster all making contributions in both singles and doubles.  Forum's Tony Ayliffe was the POM however, winning both his singles and combining with Dave Woolmer for a doubles win at the end of the evening. Dave added the other point for Forum with a win over Ian, but it was a blank night for Tony Mace.

The Grays pair of Mike Trendell and Dmitry Kisil were unbeaten in singles and doubles as their team were convincing 8/1 winners over Stanford 'D'.  Stanford skipper, Rob Salvage, had an eventful night recovering from 0-6 in the final set against Max Southby to win 11-6 and leave Max speechless (there is a first time for everything!).  Rob's other singles was also a 5-setter but on this occasion it was Dmitry who was the 5th set winner at 11-9.

Division 2

Basildon 'F' travelled to Stanford 'C' and came away 6/3 winners.  Lindsay Farge and Mike Keeble both won their two singles and a doubles in partnership with Sarah Ball.  For Stanford there was a win each for Peter Moxham and Andrew Jessop and the pair combined to win their doubles together.

Rasheed Olaniyan was the POM, winning both his singles and doubles for Wickford Community 'A' in their 6/3 win over league leaders Canvey.  It was the doubles that proved to be the deciding factor in this match with Wickford winning all three of them.  Dave Calleja added another point with a win over Andrew Murray but was beaten in 3 close sets by Jo Hills.  Andrew and Lee McGonagle were the other singles winners for Canvey.

Andy Roff won both his singles as Basildon 'E' beat Wickford Community 'B' 6/3, but he was made to work hard for his win over Steve Goldstone before coming out on top 11-8, 11-9, 8-11, 9-11, 11-9.    Jenne Seibolt and Errol Anderson each added a singles win and they combined to win their doubles.  For Wickford, there was a singles win apiece for Steve and Keith Bushell and the pair were straight sets winners over Andy and Errol in the first game of the night.

Finally, Stanford 'D' were unable to field a team for their match against Basildon 'G' and conceded the points accordingly.
