Week 29 Report

Premier Division

Selbourne were a two-man team for their visit to Northlands Park 'B', but Kevin Read and Keith Willett were only denied a win for their team when they lost in the final doubles to the father and son combination of Richard and Adam Jackman.  Kevin was the player of the match, winning his 3 singles in straight sets.  Northlands only singles win came with Richard's victory over Keith.  5/5 was the match result here.

Matt Stringer and Sanjay Saptarshi were in fine form for Hockley 'A' as they recorded a 6/4 win over Northlands Park 'A'.  Matt was unbeaten and Sanjay added two wins and the pair then combined to win the final doubles.  This was a really close match throughout with no fewer than 6 of the 10 games going the full distance.  For Northlands, there were two wins for Gurj Bhambra and a win each for John Monk and Norbert Fullerton.

Basildon 'A' took advantage of Northlands' defeat to open up a 7 point lead at the top of the table with a 9/1 win over Maylands Green.  Ian Wall and Daniel Bronziet were unbeaten but Dan Zeffie was denied a maximum when he lost the closest of games to Chris Penrose, 11-13, 11-7, 11-8, 11-13, 11-13.

Division 1

Basildon 'B' have clinched the Division 1 title following their 8/1 win over Basildon 'D'.  Robert Kemp was the player of the match, winning both his singles and doubles.  Les Hoey was also unbeaten but he was forced to recover from two sets behind before getting the better of Richard Gill, 7-11, 9-11, 11-7, 11-6, 11-8.  Basildon 'D's only point came from a notable win for Szymon Jarka over the consistent Garry Hartgrove in another tight game, 11-9, 10-12, 5-11, 11-9, 11-8.

COYS will end the season as runners up.  This week they took on a two-man Basildon 'C' team and emerged as 7/2 winners.  Gus Heath was the player of the match, winning both his singles, but John Tendler was surprisingly beaten by Chudi Ukpaka, who also won his doubles with Colin Clements, getting the better of John and Paul Sims in the final end.

Stanford 'A' seem likely to finish third in this Division.  Their latest outing saw them beat Grays 6/3.  Pete Weatherall and Dave Hancox were unbeaten in singles and also won their doubles together.  Saad Abdullah was their other point winner with a 4-set victory over Max Southby.  Dmitry Kisil was the best player on the night for Grays with a singles win, and doubles wins with Max and Mike Trendell.

The closest match of the week saw bottom of the table Stanford 'B' finally record their first win of the season, a 5/4 victory away at Hadleigh Forum.  Stanford skipper Rob Salvage led from the front winning both his singles, and his doubles paired with Chris Crooks and Steve King.  Steve picked up the other point for Stanford with a win over Colin Barham.  Peter Lucraft was the best player on the night winning both his singles in straight sets.  Graham Farmer added a singles win and teamed up with Peter to win the final doubles.

Division 2

Wickford Community 'A' still have hopes of overhauling Canvey at the top of the table, and this week's 7/2 win over Basildon 'E' certainly helped their cause.  Dave Walton was the player of the match with two singles and two doubles wins, Stephen Chooi also won both his singles, both in 5 sets, but Kevin Wollen was beaten by Andy Roff in a tight 5-setter.  Andy just edging this one, 8-11, 11-8, 11-9, 8-11, 11-9.  Basildon's other point came in the final doubles with a victory Andy and Ross Letham over Kevin and Steve.

League leaders Canvey recorded a narrow 5/4 win over Wickford Community 'B'.  Steve Goldstone was the stand out player for Wickford with an unbeaten performance in both singles and doubles.  Ultimately though, it was the all round team performance from Canvey that won the day.  Andrew Murray won both his singles and there was a singles win each for Jo Hills and Lee McGonagle.  Andrew and Lee also won their doubles together.

The match between Stanford 'D' and Basildon 'F' was all square at 4/4 when Mark Farley and Randy Santiago for Stanford took on Basildon's Steve Lennox and Alwine Jarvis in the final doubles. This was a very tight game that swung back and forth before Steve and Alwine took the final set 11-8 to win the game and clinch the match 5/4 for their team.  Earlier, there was a singles win each for Mark, Randy and Jack Diver, with Mark and Jack also successful in their doubles together, although they had to overcome the loss of the first two sets before beating Steve and Mike Keeble in the final end.  Steve took the player of the match honours winning both his singles and the crucial doubles at the end.

Another match where the final result was determined on the last doubles was the clash between Basildon 'G' and Stanford 'C'.  On this occasion, it was the Stanford pairing of Andrew Jessop and James Parker who won the match for their side with a straight sets win over Debbie O'Neil and Gloria Acheampong.  The very consistent Jeremy Giffin was the player of the match for Basildon winning both his singles and his doubles with Debbie.  For Stanford, there was a singles win each for Andrew, James and Peter Moxham, with Peter and Andrew combining for the extra point
