Lancashire Closed Tournament Success for Barrow Juniors

There was plenty of success for the young players of Barrow & District Table Tennis League a the recent Lancashire Closed competition.

Ben McDonald was double champion at Cadet and Junior level and Matthew Rigg and his sister Rebecca both came home with runner up trophies.

The competition (for players who live in Lancashire or who participate in the Lancashire Cadet league) was keenly contested with players from all over the county.

After negotiating their way through the groups, the knock out stages and semi finals, Ben and Matthew met in the Junior Final (U'18's) - both players are only 14!

In a see-saw 5 set battle, Ben won the deciding set to take the title 3-2.  Both players put on a very entertaining and nail-biting final, which was supported by a knowledgeable audience.

Rebecca Rigg played in the Cadet girls (U'15) competition in a round robin format.  In effect the last game was a final as the 12 year old and her opponent had won all their games.  However, Rebecca lost the final 3-1 in a game which could have gone either way.

In the afternoon it was the Cadet boys competition.  Again Ben and Matthew negotiated the groups and were set to meet in the final again.  However,  Matthew ran out of steam in the quarter finals and lost in 5 sets.

Ben went on to play Toby Ellis in the final and ran out a 3-0 winner.
