Andover Advertiser Report 18-04-16

The final of the Advertiser Cup (a team handicap competition) saw Div 1 leaders Hanson Pumas take on fourth placed Hanson Cougars. This proved to be a very tight match which was contested by two of the league’s top players.

Cougars got off to a great start when Gerry Vaughan (on plus 7 points per game) wore down Justin Shoemark to record a 13-21, 17-21 victory. This start was maintained as at the same time Chris Stockdale (on plus 7 points per game) managed a terrific 15-21, 21-15, 16-21 win over Richard Fettes. Better still for Cougars, Andy Barnes beat Eddie Shoemark (on plus 7 points per game) 15-21, 17-21. Cougars were now three sets up out of nine and needed only two more sets to win.

Pumas now started their comeback with Eddie holding on to beat Gerry (on plus 8 points per game) 21-14, 15-21, 21-18. Richard resumed his rivalry with Andy and as both players were on the same handicap it was a straight fight to 21 points. Richard played exceedingly well winning 21-12, 21-20 to confirm his league wins over Andy. The score was now Pumas 2 Cougars 3.

Meanwhile Chris was playing a rejuvenated Justin and clung on to win 21-16, 20-21, 18-21. Cougars now had four wins and needed one more.

Richard had to play Gerry and despite giving away 11 points per game he came through comfortably 21-15, 21-16. This meant it was now Pumas 3, Cougars 4, with two to play.

These last two games were played at the same time. Eddie and Chris started level and with Chris tiring, Eddie came through to take it 21-19, 21-19. So it all came down to the other set that was still being played, between Justin (on plus 8 points per game) and Andy. Justin was smarting from his earlier defeats and went for every shot. Andy who likes to attack, slightly played into Justin’s hands by top spinning the ball to him. Justin continued to hit everything and successfully managed a 21-13, 17-21, 21-19 victory.

With this last result Pumas became champions by winning the match 5 - 4.

A late result in Div 1 saw Hanson Leopards go down 7 – 26 to the new champions Hanson Pumas. Richard Fettes won all three for Pumas, with Eddie and Justin Shoemark both getting two each. However Pumas did not have it all their own way, as Rob Macey beat Eddie 11-9, 11-5, 11-9 and Pete Dyson overcame Justin 11-4, 10-12, 4-11, 11-9, 11-2.
