Due to sickness a late Championship final saw the Ladies Singles played between Sue Purton and Nicky Downs. Sue was playing to retain her title and was in good form. Unfortunately for Nicky, nerves and the delay in playing the final did not helped her recapture her semi-final form. This combination of factors resulted in an easy 11-2, 11-2, 11-7 for Sue to record her sixth ladies singles title.
A mid table match in Division 1 pitted fifth placed Hanson Jaguars against fourth placed Hanson Cougars with the points going to Jaguars 20 – 19. However this was a draw in sets and a moral victory for Cougars as Gerry Vaughan injured his bat hand in the warm up so only attempted one set. Nick George (Cougars) started well with a good 9-11, 11-8, 11-9, 9-11, 8-11 win against Trevor Whitelock and proceeded to win two sets. However he came a cropper later when going down 11-6, 8-11, 8-11, 11-7, 11-7 to Graham Audin who played very steadily. Trevor came back with a good win against Chris Stockdale (Cougars) 8-11, 12-10, 7-11, 11-5, 12-10, but Chris won his other two sets. With Gerry conceding his sets Cougars needed to win the doubles 3-0 to equal Jaguars points’ total. Unfortunately Trevor & Sue Purton put up stiff opposition, so Nick & Chris only managed to win 7-11, 11-3, 10-12, 10-12, to lose the match by one point.
Hanson Panthers confirmed their bottom place with a 2 – 30 loss to third placed Hanson ‘A’. Despite Dave Broomfield (Panthers) battling hard he could not stop Dan Geary, Peter Henderson and Steve Rollason winning all their sets. He did manage to prolong the match by taking Steve to five games before losing 11-6, 11-6, 9-11, 2-11, 6-11.
