Andover Advertiser Report 16-03-15

Andy Barnes had a great Andover Closed Tournament getting through to four finals, but Richard Fettes went one better by contesting five finals. In the Open Singles Richard stood a very good chance against last years champion Andy Barnes, whom he had previously beaten in the league. Whilst it was a very close encounter with excellent rallies, Andy managed to keep control of Richards vicious loops and throw in a few of his own when possible. The outcome could have gone either way but Richard eventually lost to Andy 9-11, 11-9, 11-5, 10-12 & 9-11. In the Veterans Final Richard (last years champion) again came up against Andy Barnes and lost in four games 8-11, 15-13, 9-11 & 9-11. Richard and Andy had to work very hard to overcome some serious division two opponents to reach the Handicap Singles Final. Both had the same handicap, so it was a straight fight to 21 points which Andy won 21-16, 21-18.

Andy and Richard also contested the Open Doubles final. As defending champions Andy again teamed up with Shaun Carver to defeat Richard and Ray Carver 14-12, 11-4 & 11-7.

In the Mixed Doubles Final Richard at last managed to get his hands on a trophy when he teamed up with Sue Purton to defeat Steve Harris and Nicky Downs 11-4, 8-11, 11-5 & 12-10.

In the Ladies Singles Final last years champion Marie Dyke had to settle for second best to Sue Purton, but not without fighting hard to retain her title before succumbing 8-11, 11-8, 6-11 & 10-12.

The Division 2 Singles Final was a repeat of last years final with Andy Farmer again defeating Karl Jones 11-2, 11-9, 7-11, 10-12 & 11-8 but the result was much closer than last year.

The Ladies Doubles and Handicap Doubles have yet to be played when all the players become available.

In Division 1 Hanson Cougars managed to inflict the first defeat on the two man Tigers team 22 – 12. Tigers were unlucky to have Andy Snellgrove cry off at the last minute due to an injury at work. However Malcolm Cummins starred for Tigers by winning his three. Andy Barnes, Steve Harris and Gerry Vaughan who played very well all defeated Jerry Holt. Andy & Steve combined to claim victory from Malcolm & Jerry in the doubles 11-13, 11-9, 12-14, 11-8, 11-2.

3D’s took on two man Hanson Panthers in a top of the table clash in Division 2. Panthers had an excellent 21 – 13 win thanks to three each from Andy Farmer and Dave Broomfield.
