Andover Advertiser Report 09-11-15

The first round matches this week in the Advertiser Cup, which is a team handicap competition, showed how good the handicapping was with four out of six matches finishing 5 - 4.

Div 1 Hanson Pumas recorded a convincing 8 – 1 win over their Div 2 opponents Enham, which considering they were giving away an average of nearly fourteen points per game this was an amazing result. Eddie Shoemark and Richard Fettes won all three for Pumas, but Eddie only just managed to overcome Roy Horner 20-21, 21-16, 21-19. Patrick Baker (Enham) was their only winner when he defeated Justin Shoemark 16-21, 21-18, 13-21.

Two Div 1 teams clashed with Hanson Panthers overcoming two man Hanson Leopards 6 – 1. Dave Broomfield stared for Panthers winning two close encounters, firstly 21-15, 17-21, 21-17 against Rob Macey, then 26-24, 21-9 against James Clark.

Another Div 1 encounter saw Hanson ‘A’ lose to Figheldean 4 – 5. For Hanson ‘A’ Dan Geary and Peter Henderson won two each, whilst for Figheldean Lionel Coles and Brian Cook both won two. This was interesting as Dan beat Lionel 21-20, 12-21, 21-16, but lost to Brian 17-21, 21-9, 12-21. Meanwhile Peter beat Brian 21-20, 16-21, 21-12, but lost to Lionel in straight games. Luckily for Figheldean Julie Dean defeated Steve Rollason 8-21, 20-21 to clinch the match.

An all Div 2 match saw Test Valley ‘A’ record their first win of the season when they defeated 3D’s 5 – 4. This match was a very close with five of the nine sets going to three games. Chris Melville (TV ‘A’) started proceedings with a good 21-12, 21-7 win over Marie Dyke. Nicky Downs (3D’s) fought back to win 21-14, 20-21, 20-21 against Alex Dennis, then Rachel Hicks (3D’s) beat Annabel Anderson 13-21, 21-13, 20-21. Annabel (TV ‘A’) continued to work very hard for her team beating Nicky 21-7, 18-21, 21-14 and Marie 21-6, 20-21, 21-9. At the conclusion Alex and Annabel had won two each, whilst Nicky and Rachel had also finished on two each.

Another Div 2 match resulted in Hanson Falcons losing to Hanson Pidgeons 4 – 5. Jason Cullip won two for Falcons recording a good 21-19, 16-21, 21-17 win over Nathan Shears. Nathan went on to win two for Pidgeons, as did Simon Przeklasa who just managed to defeat Jason 21-11, 19-21, 17-21. Whilst Val Fox and Simon Prosser won one each for Falcons, Adam Shears also won one which helped clinch the match for Pidgeons.

A Div 2/Div1 clash saw Hanson Kestrals defeated by Hanson Cougars 4 -5. Cougars had to give away an average of eleven points per game, but thanks to Chris Stockdale and Gerry Vaughan who won two each and Nick George who only got one, they just managed the win. William Cooper (Kestrals) won two as did Mark Pettengell, but he only just overcame Nick 21-16, 20-21, 21-16 and then Chris 19-21, 21-16, 21-20.
