The semi finals of the Advertiser Cup team handicap competition saw a very close match
between Hanson Hawks and Hanson Jaguars, which resulted in a 5 – 4 win for Hawks.
Adam Lockington again stared for Hawks when winning his three sets, but he was pushed
hard by Brian Fox before clinching victory 21-16, 15-21, 21-16. Ollie Raymond (Hawks) also
played very well to win two close sets, firstly 21-12, 16-21, 21-16 over Brian and then 16-21,
21-12, 21-16 over Graham Audin. Trevor Whitelock (Jaguars) overcame his 10 to 14 points
per game disadvantage to win two sets with both Graham and Brian getting one each.
The other semi final produced an excellent 5 – 1 win for Hanson Dolphins over Hanson ‘A’.
Dolphins wrapped this match up in the first five sets with Mike Cartidge and Rob Macey
winning two each and Dom Raymond one. Peter Henderson had a belated win for Hanson
‘A’ when he beat Dom. The only set to go to three games was when Mike recorded a 17-21,
21-17, 21-12 win over Dan Geary.
In the Weighill Trophy team handicap competition there ensued a very close match with
Hanson Lions losing out to Enham 4 – 5. Darren Walkom (Lions) produced a 21-17, 20-21,
21-17 win over Patrick Baker in the first match. After this the sets were over in two games
with Mike Bonarius (Lions) getting three, whilst Roy Horner (Enham) got two and Patrick
one. Pete Farmer won one but then had to play the last match against Darren with the match
score at 4 – 4. This was a nail biting set as Pete won the first game 21-20, lost the next
20-21 and just managed to hold on at the end, to win 21-19 and secure the match.
Hanson Cougars had a good 6 – 3 win against Test Valley ‘A’ thanks to an unlikely three by
Steve Harris, who had the highest handicap. There were some very close games with the ‘A’
team just missing out. However Cameron Langdown won two, beating Gerry Vaughan
10-21, 14-21 and Nick George 19-21, 17-21. Izzy Woodfield also produced an excellent
result when beating Nick 16-21, 5-21.
The doubles delayed the finalisation of the Division 2 match between Hanson Hawks and 3D’s which eventually resulted in a 21 – 16 win for Hawks. Ollie Raymond starred for Hawks in winning his three, but he was taken to five games in two of the sets. Adam Lockington (Hawks) won two and combined with Ollie to take the doubles. For 3D’s Jessie Yi and Marie Dyke both won one each, but Brian Dyke won two with an exceptional performance to beat Adam 10-12, 11-17, 9-11, 5-11.
Hanson Panthers continued at the top of the division by defeating 3D’s 29 – 6. Dave Broomfield and Andy Farmer both won three for Panthers. Nicky Downs (3D’s) played very well to record an excellent victory over James Taylor 11-8, 3-11, 11-9, 6-11, 6-11.
