The league recommenced after the Christmas break with Hanson Dolphins of Division 1 being well beaten by Hanson ‘A’ 8 – 30, thanks to three sets each from Steve Rollason, Peter Henderson & Josh White. Steve was somewhat fortunate as he was taken to five games by Mike Cartridge before winning 4-11, 11-9, 121-9, 7-11, 9-11, then by Rob Macey 11-4, 8-11, 11-8, 9-11, 11-13.
Figheldean went down 12 – 23 to Hanson Pumas. Richard Fettes got three and Shaun Carver managed two for Pumas, whilst Lionel Coles recorded two for Figheldean. Phil Cook was unlucky as he was 2-1 up against Ray Carver before being forced to retire with a pulled muscle.
Hanson Jaguars lost out to their nearest rivals Hanson Cougars 12 – 22, thanks to three from Andy Barnes (Cougars) and two from Steve Harris. For Jaguars, Trevor Whitelock won two and a fit again Brian Fox had a convincing 11-5, 11-6, 11-5 win over Nick George.
In Division 2 Hanson Falcons were trounced by Hanson Panthers 2 – 30. Andy Farmer, James Taylor and Dave Broomfield comfortably won all their games for Panthers.
Test Valley ‘A’ went down 3 – 30 to Enham for whom Patrick Baker, Roy Horner and Pete Farmer all won three. This result keeps Enham temporarily at the top of the table until Panthers manage to play their outstanding matches.
Hanson Hawks overcame Hanson Pidgeons in a close match by 23 – 16. Ollie Raymond and Adam Lockington won three each for Hawks but the majority of the sets went to four or five games. Pidgeons at least managed to win one set each and Nathan Shears was unlucky to lose to Ollie in five games, 9-11, 7-11, 11-7, 11-4, 12-10. Hawks just held on in the doubles to take the set 11-7, 10-12, 9-11, 11-6, 11-8. This match demonstrated how much the Pidgeons players have improved.
The closest match of the week was between Hanson Lions and 3D’s, which ended with both teams winning five sets each, but Lions taking the match 20 – 18. Lions had Karl Jones to thank for winning three, supported with one apiece from Mike Bonarius and Darren Walkom. Marie and Brian Dyke both won two each for 3D’s, with Marie teaming up with Jessie Yi to take the doubles. However Karl was pushed all the way in his match with Marie, before eventually winning 8-11, 11-7, 11-7, 4-11, 16-14.
