Andover Advertiser Report 100214

The first semi-final of the Advertiser Cup saw Hanson C defeat Hanson D 6-3, thanks to three from Nick George, two from Jamie Smith and one from Andy Barnes who was giving the opponents 12-13 points start per game. Hanson D started well with Mike Cartridge beating Andy and shortly afterwards defeating Jamie. The result might have gone the other way if Jamie had not clung on to beat Alex Powell 21-16, 18-21 & 21-16 and Nick not managed a 21-17. 19-21 & 21-17 win against the same player. Alex was playing well and did help his team with a spirited 3-21, 21-17 & 17-21 win over Andy.

In the first quarter-final of the Weighill Trophy, Enham were surprisingly beaten 0 - 5 by 3D’s. The crucial factor in this win for 3D’s were the defeats of Andy Farmer, firstly by Nicky Downs 18-21, 21-19 & 12-21, then by Marie Dyke 18-21, 21-18 & 20-21. Marie also beat Dave Slack as did Brian Dyke who also convincingly defeated Peter Farmer.

In Division 2 Hanson F lost 4 – 6 to Hanson E. Three from Rhys Jones and two from Jonny Macey were enough for the E team, whilst Roy Horner’s two for Hanson F failed to prevent their defeat.

Test Valley A were defeated 3 – 7 by 3D’s, but Adam Lockington played very well to win his three for the A team. Two each from Nicky Downs, Jessie Yi and Marie Dyke saw 3D’s home. They also won the doubles when Nicky and Marie defeated Adam and Matt Selwood 11-8, 1-11, 11-6, 6-11 & 7-11.

Division 1 saw an unusual match when two man Hanson Lions lost to two man Tigers 3 – 6. The shock of this match was Andy Snellgrove (Tigers) losing to Matt Carter (Lions) who played well to win 6-11, 11-7, 11-8 & 11-7. Jerry Holt won his two to keep Tigers in front whilst Andy just managed to overcome Zac Hine 9-11, 9-11 & 9-11.

Puma’s kept up the pressure at the top of the table with a 6 – 4 win over Figheldean. Richard Fettes was again the star for Pumas winning his three, ably supported by Ray Carver with two. For Figheldean the steady Lionel Coles won two. Half the sets went to 5 games and it could have gone either way, but Pumas managed to take the doubles 11-7, 3-11, 6-11, 11-5 & 11-6.

Hanson A and Hanson C fought out a 5 – 5 draw, thanks to three from Andy Barnes (C). Steve Rollason (A) held on against Jamie Smith to win 13-11, 11-13, 13-15, 11-9 & 11-7, whilst Peter Henderson did the same to Nick George, winning 11-3, 10-12, 3-11, 11-8 & 11-4. The C team snatched a draw by winning the doubles when Nick and Andy defeated Peter and Dan Geary 11-8, 3-11, 13-11, 6-11 & 12-14.

Hanson B with two players beat Wallop Wanderers 7 – 3, with both Colin Shepherd and Trevor Whitelock winning three each. The final result did not match the games played as four of the seven sets went to 5 games, with Rob Macey (WW) being particularly unlucky.
