PRESS REPORT – Sunday 30th Sept
It’s as you were in the First Division on the first week of the new season, as the dominant force last year started with an impressive 9-1 win: Torbay Academy 1’s Kris Piwowar, Jakub Piwowar and Lenard Hernandez were undefeated in the singles against Brixham Gulls who did well to win the final doubles to prevent the whitewash. A similar score line saw Brixham Sharks defeat Halwell, with maximums for Clive Banham & Gordon Holmes. The 3 Newton Abbot teams in the top flight start their campaigns next week.

In the 2nd Division in an all-Newton Abbot clash, the Eagles showed their credentials for the coming season with a fine 9-1 win over clubmates the Falcons. Ed Crawford and Jim McIvor were unbeaten, Mike Kavanagh getting the Falcons’ point. Helen Glover was in fine form as Marldon defeated promoted Denbury Tykes 7-3. Torbay Academy 3 also won 7-3, with Warren Ngai and Szymon Furgol maximums seeing them through to victory over Brixham Trawlers.

Marldon Tykes, last season’s runners-up, started their 3rd Division campaign with an excellent 9-1 win over Torbay Academy 5, with Chris Garner and Kevin Ayling unbeaten. Also convincing winners, and looking very strong, were Torbay Academy 3 as they defeated Dawlish Drifters 8-2 thanks to maximums from Lucas Bradshaw and Ben Hoare. The two Newton Abbot teams in this Division also had good wins, the Hawks winning 9-1 at Torbay Academy 4, Doug Morgan and Pete Sercombe going well for the Hawks[ and the Kestrels who defeated Brixham Dolphins 8-2, Robert Williams and Mitch Bellham with maximums for the Kestrels.

Hasbeens, who look very strong this season, started their 4th Division campaign with a 9-1 victory over Torre Panthers with Mike Coxhead and Alan Tyrrell to the fore. Also 9-1 winners, NA Owls saw off Dawlish Drifters, with Rowan and Rob Bayliss unbeaten, but with a fine effort by the Drifters’ Tony Bussell to prevent the whitewash. A Chris Harper maximum helped Torre Titans to an 8-2 win over NA Kites and Kamil Sniegocki was undefeated as Torbay Academy 6 saw off Torre Tigers 6-4.
All 4 matches in the newly formed 5th Division were close affairs. Brixham Swifts and NA Merlins shared the spoils at Brixham 5-5, James Rodger unbeaten for the Swifts. An Andy Guy maximum helped his team, NA Vultures, to a 6-4 win at Dawlish over the Dodgers. Torbay Academy 7 defeated Brixham Seals 7-3 thanks to a fine maximum from young Kacper Piwowar. Another youngster going well was Henry Greet whose maximum helped NA Ospreys to a 7-3 win over Dawlish Delights.
